Ming-chi Kuo said the foldable MacBook is expected to launch in 2026, while he previously predicted a launch in 2027, meaning the launch schedule is a year earlier than planned.
A concept design for a foldable MacBook that Apple is about to launch
In terms of screen size, Apple is considering an 18.8-inch panel to replace the previously rumored 20.3-inch panel. While the 20.3-inch panel would resemble the current 14- and 15-inch MacBooks when folded, the 18.8-inch panel would be closer to the 13- and 14-inch versions.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple hopes to reduce the crease on the display as much as possible, which places very high demands on the design parameters of the panel and hinge. Therefore, the cost of the panel and hinge is also very high, with estimates of about $600-650 and $200-250, respectively.
Kuo points out that if productivity is significantly improved during mass production, the cost is expected to decrease. But in the short term, the cost of the panel and hinge will make the price of the foldable MacBook quite high.
If Apple can’t improve productivity and reduce costs before mass production, the price of the foldable MacBook will likely be close to the current Vision Pro, meaning it will start at $3,499. However, because the foldable MacBook has a clearer market positioning, shipments will be significantly higher than the Vision Pro. Kuo expects shipments to reach more than 1 million units by 2026.
