Regularly, regardless of rain or shine, students of the literacy class for ethnic minorities in Gia Lai still keep their lights on. The diligence and hard work of the students and the efforts of the teachers have been and are illuminating the knowledge base in the ethnic minority community.
For nearly 3 months now, teacher Kso H'Vot's classroom at Ngo May Primary School has been lit up every night. With 32 ethnic minority students aged 23-59, teacher Kso H'Vot's curriculum is also very special - the large letters curriculum for elementary school.
Late in the afternoon, Mr. Saih (50 years old) and his wife Kso H'Jin (53 years old), in Breng 3 village, Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district, are busy arranging their work to be on time for class. Although they are middle-aged, they still work diligently every night to find knowledge.
Life was hard, when they were young, they were not allowed to go to school. Even now, when the family has a daughter-in-law and son-in-law, they still cannot read and write. To set an example for their children and grandchildren, they registered for a literacy class in the village and encouraged their son-in-law to go to class too.
Mr. Kso H'Jin shared: "We must learn to read and write so that we can later grasp the policies of the Party and the State. Knowing how to read and write will help us read many good things and apply them to production and economic development."
As older students, it is inevitable that they feel shy and embarrassed, but "leaders" like Mr. Saih and his wife have encouraged the literacy movement. Then, after a day of working in the fields, 32 students in Breng 3 village enthusiastically went to class.
Diligence and hard work paid off when students were able to read each verse and write each letter clearly.
Ms. Ro Lan Be (49 years old, Breng 1 village, Ia Der commune, Ia Grai district) confided that seeing people in the village go to school, learn to read and write, she also went to school. She tries to study so that in the future she can teach her children and grandchildren to understand the announcements and propaganda of the local government.
Because the class is for ethnic minorities, aged 20-60, to achieve the results like today is a great effort of teachers and students. Choosing teachers to teach the class, understand and be fluent in the local language is the key to the success of the program.
Ngo May Primary School (Ia Der Commune, Ia Grai District) is a typical example. As of October 2023, Ia Grai District has opened 49 literacy classes with 1,317 students, accounting for 20.25% of the total number of literacy students in the province.
Understanding the customs and being close to the people, teacher K'So H'Vot's class always maintains a student population of 32/32. Besides the attention of the local government, the villagers are very aware of education. At first, she had to go out to persuade and propagate to the villagers to understand the benefits of learning to read and write, but now it is much easier.
Her class currently has 32/32 students, and every day at 6pm everyone is present in class. The diligence of the students helps them quickly learn to read and write, teacher H'Vot confided.
The work of eliminating illiteracy in ethnic minority communities in Gia Lai has achieved many positive results with the drastic participation of authorities at all levels and the diligence of teachers in staying close to the people and staying close to the villages.
Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Gia Lai province, Tran Ba Cong, happily said that the work of eliminating illiteracy in the province is being carried out very effectively by all levels and sectors. In 2022, the work of opening new illiteracy eradication classes will be deployed in 2/17 localities across the province, including 7 classes with 168 students.
As of October 10, 17/17 localities had opened literacy classes, including 226 classes with 6,502 students, reaching 73.5% of the assigned target and meeting the plan for the 2022-2025 period.
