On the morning of October 17, the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) filed a complaint with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to denounce the insulting behavior of Indonesian fans towards their team. BFA requested the AFC to change the venue of the second leg of the 2026 World Cup Asian qualifiers between Bahrain and Indonesia, following threats directed at team members.
"The misbehavior of Indonesian fans towards the Bahrain team is unacceptable. Since the match in the qualifying round, we have received numerous insults, directed at the Federation and the players. We are contacting FIFA and AFC to report these actions, expressing our insecurity when having to travel to their capital Jakarta for the second leg match," BFA mentioned in the latest announcement.
BFA expressed concern over threats from Indonesian public opinion, since the 2-2 draw between the two teams in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Bahrain took the lead from the 15th minute, but conceded 2 goals in the 45+3 and 74th minutes. It was not until the 90+9 minute that player Mohamed Marhoon equalized to keep 1 point for the home team. The match ended right after Marhoon's goal, in the 90+10 minute.
Indonesian fans were angry with referee Ahmed Al Kaf and Bahrain players because the second half injury time was only 6 minutes. They believed that the referee ended the match later than the regulation, interfering with the final result.
Before submitting the application to AFC, BFA had publicly disclosed that the Federation's website and players' personal accounts had been hacked. Sensitive messages appeared in players' personal accounts, and BFA officials' accounts were also hacked, causing operational delays.
Indonesia just suffered their first defeat in the 2026 World Cup qualifying round 3. Conceding 2 goals in the first half, Shin Tae-yong's team only managed to score 1 goal in the final minutes of the second half. The bottom team China has now caught up with Indonesia in points, only ranking lower due to a lower sub-index.
The match between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia ended in a goalless draw. Bahrain is currently ranked 4th with 5 points. This position is enough for them to move on to the 4th qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
