Le Van Cong is the top hope for Vietnamese disabled weightlifting because he is not only the number 1 weightlifter in Southeast Asia in the 49kg weight class but also the 2016 Rio Paralympic champion and the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic runner-up.

Not disappointing expectations, Le Van Cong once again affirmed his name when winning the gold medal in weightlifting in the men's 49kg category at the 12th ASEAN Para Games. After 3 lifts, the athlete from Ha Tinh successfully conquered the weights of 162kg, 166kg and 168kg respectively. Athlete Hadi A (Indonesia) won the silver medal with the highest result of 166kg. At this year's ASEAN Para Games, the organizing committee will award 2 sets of medals in a weightlifting category, which are the best result in a single lift and the best total lift. Le Van Cong achieved the best result in a single lift of 168kg and the best total lift after 3 lifts of 496kg, thereby winning 2 gold medals in this category.

Thus, Le Van Cong continued to successfully defend his gold medal in the men's 49kg category. Last August in Indonesia, Le Van Cong won the gold medal in the men's 49kg category at the 11th ASEAN Para Games with the following parameters: 160kg, 165kg and 170kg.

With the 12th ASEAN Para Games gold medal, Le Van Cong has affirmed his No. 1 position in the regional arena for 16 years, since his first gold medal at the 2007 ASEAN Para Games. In total, the weightlifter from Ha Tinh has won 6 ASEAN Para Games championships, in 2007, 2009, 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2023.

Weightlifter Le Van Cong is the most successful athlete of the country's Paralympic sports in the international arena. The peak of Cong's career was lifting 183 kg, breaking the world record and winning a gold medal at the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil. Along with that are 2 gold medals at the 2016 and 2017 World Paralympic Weightlifting Championships, silver medals at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, gold medals at the 2007 and 2014 Asian Para Games, 6 times champion of the ASEAN Para Games,... At the age of 39, Le Van Cong has conquered another gold medal at the Games in Cambodia. That is a great motivation for him to aim for bigger arenas such as the Asiad and Paralympics.
