Gardening combined with tourism
In order to increase the value of land use and contribute to the development of the family economy, Ms. Diem Kieu - owner of Tan Loc Coconut Garden (Thot Not District, Can Tho City) - has boldly renovated and upgraded her 500-tree coconut garden into a place for visitors to visit and experience.
“This coconut garden was planted by my father and grandfather more than 10 years ago. At first, I only opened a small shop selling coconuts to passersby and supplying some local places. When many customers expressed interest and wanted to visit and take photos in the garden, I came up with the idea of combining it with tourism,” Ms. Kieu recounted.
In addition to adding tables, chairs, and hammocks, Ms. Kieu also renovated and cleaned the garden to make it clean and airy. At the same time, she hired workers to dredge ditches, release fish, and arrange boats for guests to experience.
Also doing tourism in his home garden, Mr. Nguyen Van Tan - owner of the 100-year-old Mangosteen Garden Eco-Tourism Area (Thanh Xuan Commune, Chau Thanh A District, Hau Giang Province) - shared that this idea originated from the realization that people like to visit the fruit garden, especially impressed with the family's 2 hundred-year-old mangosteen trees.
"My wife and her friends brought the tourism project in the family garden to participate in and won the Women's Startup Competition in Hau Giang province. From there, my wife and I had more motivation and decided to invest and develop tourism in our own garden," said Mr. Tan.
Get more profit
Since applying this business model, on average, Ms. Kieu's coconut garden welcomes about 30 - 50 customers per day; on holidays, Tet, and weekends, the number of customers can reach hundreds of people.
“In addition to local people, visitors from other provinces such as Dong Thap, An Giang, etc. also come to the coconut garden to visit and experience. Compared to supplying to restaurants, selling coconuts to tourists is more profitable. In addition, I can also earn extra income from selling snacks and renting boats,” Ms. Kieu shared.
Officially in operation for more than a year, Mr. Tan's mangosteen garden has welcomed over 3,000 visitors. Here, visitors can pick fruits, participate in cultural activities, take souvenir photos, row boats, enjoy specialties...
According to Mr. Tan, although the profit is not high, tourism has brought another source of income to his family's economy. In the near future, Mr. Tan plans to invest and develop the garden to serve the entertainment needs of tourists.
Mr. Pham Quoc Viet, Chairman of Thanh Xuan Commune People's Committee, said that the 100-year-old Mangosteen Garden Eco-tourism Area is gradually being completed and has great potential for development. It is expected that in the near future, this place will continue to attract many visitors. The locality has proposed to the province to connect with travel agencies and travel companies to introduce this tourist destination to people inside and outside the area. At the same time, proactively support and create conditions for garden owners to complete procedures, access investment capital sources, develop some additional items; connect with units to set up booths to display OCOP products, serve tourists to buy souvenirs, etc.
