The school makes an impression of green living in Can Tho

In addition to teaching results, Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted has also impressed with its environmental protection achievements. The interesting point is that the school no longer has public trash cans because students are spreading the spirit of "saying no" to plastic waste. The image of Can Tho students carrying water bottles and lunch boxes instead of plastic cups and styrofoam boxes has become familiar at this school.

Students carrying water bottles and lunch boxes instead of plastic cups and foam boxes has become familiar at Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted (Cai Rang District, Can Tho City).

In the morning, Dao Minh Ngoc (class 11A5) brought a backpack containing books and a cloth bag containing drinks and food prepared at home to school. The water was stored in a thermos, and the rice was stored in a glass box. After eating with her friends during recess, Ngoc put the lunch box and water bottle back into the cloth bag, washed them, and brought them home.

Ngoc said that when she entered 10th grade, she was inspired to protect the environment. This activity has become a routine, becoming a competitive movement between classes at school. Ngoc confided: "Before, I often bought things in styrofoam boxes and plastic cups because of the convenience, and after eating, I threw them in the trash. But when I entered school, I was very surprised because everyone changed this habit, switching to using water bottles and lunch boxes. After finding out, I knew the reason was that everyone was continuing the tradition of going green."

Students respond in unison to contribute to environmental protection

Accordingly, the "greening" journey of Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted began in 2018. At that time, the school had just moved in for 1 year, the campus had few trees, and at noon the wind often blew trash cans, plastic cups, and nylon bags flying everywhere. To solve this situation, the School Youth Union thought of establishing a Zero Waste Club; which aimed to encourage students to use items that replace plastic waste (plastic cups, foam boxes) to protect the environment.

Efforts to carry out the "green" journey

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Thanh, Secretary of the Youth Union of Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted, said that at first, implementing the movement was quite difficult, many parents reacted to the inconvenience. Because students go to the store to buy a lunch box very quickly, with this movement, they have to prepare breakfast early for their children.

"But with the school's efforts to promote the idea, parents have gradually agreed when they see that this is not only meaningful in terms of environmental protection but also good for their children's health. Images of students carrying water bottles and lunch boxes to school have been actively shared on social networks, and from there many people have responded," said Mr. Thanh.

Students in the school only use paper cups and sugarcane bagasse boxes to reduce plastic waste.

The interesting thing about the Zero Waste Club is that everything is run by the students themselves. Each student will act as an "ambassador" to convey the message of environmental protection, in the spirit of the first to spread to the next. The amount of waste in each class will be managed and classified by that class to visualize the specific amount, thereby adjusting their own behavior. There is no punishment for those who do wrong, but classes that do well will be awarded movement points. Therefore, students invite each other to bring water bottles and lunch boxes to strive for collective achievements.

Most students carry water bottles.

Ngo Nguyen Trung Nam (class 11A4), head of the Zero Waste Club's waste sorting committee, said that each day each class will be equipped with three different trash bins for sorting: general waste, recyclable waste, and organic waste. At the end of the school day, class representatives will gather at the club. Although the school has more than 900 students, plastic cups and foam boxes are rarely seen these days. "Every day, I spend 20 minutes receiving trash from each class. Even though I come home later than my friends, I quite like this job because I really want to contribute to protecting the school's landscape," Nam shared.

With the strong response of students, Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted has now removed public trash cans, but the surrounding landscape is still clean and beautiful. The amount of recycled waste is mostly plastic bottles, so the School Union takes advantage of them to make green nursery beds. The image of students carrying water bottles and lunch boxes has been responded to and followed by other schools in the area.

It is even more meaningful that in December 2024, Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted was recognized by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment as one of 6 schools nationwide meeting the criteria "For the national green environment".
