Urgent proposal to repair the surface of National Highway 51

The management unit has urgently requested to repair 17,000 square meters of the national highway connecting Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau because the route is full of potholes, posing a potential risk of accidents.

The proposal was made by Road Management Area IV in an official dispatch sent to the Vietnam Road Administration on July 22. The reason was that after the temporary suspension of toll collection, the number of vehicles passing through was too high, combined with heavy rain, causing damage to the road surface of National Highway 51 and the painted lines to become worn and faded.

The BOT project of National Highway 51, over 72 km long, connecting Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, with a scale of 6 lanes and a total investment of nearly 3,800 billion VND, has been in operation since April 2013. Since January 13, the road has temporarily stopped collecting tolls at the request of the Vietnam Road Administration. Immediately after that, the investor announced the temporary suspension of maintenance and repair of the road.

This route has a designed capacity of 12,000 vehicles per day and night. However, after more than 10 years of use, traffic on the route has increased by about 32,000 vehicles, up to 48,000 vehicles per day and night during peak times. Previously, traffic jams only occurred on holidays and weekends, but now they also occur on weekdays.

In addition to the 3-4 times increase in the number of vehicles, flooding, many damaged road surfaces, and the dense traffic of dump trucks carrying materials without cover, causing rocks to fall onto the road, and the dust to fly everywhere, are always a nightmare for people when passing through this national highway.

In addition to repairing damaged sections, Road Management Area IV also recommended handling accident black spots on Highway 51 such as intersections: dedicated roads in Phuoc Tan and Nam Cao wards to Long Thanh golf course, My Xuan A industrial park and Ham Nghi intersection.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, in the first 6 months of this year, Dong Nai was one of 7 localities with the number of deaths due to traffic accidents increasing by more than 20% compared to the same period in 2022. Last year alone, there were 21 traffic accidents on National Highway 51 passing through the province, killing 20 people and injuring 10 others.

The reason is not only the low awareness of some people when participating in traffic, but also the inadequacy of traffic infrastructure and the high density of tractor-trailers and trucks.
