Kon Ka Kinh National Park covers an area of nearly 42,000 hectares, of which the buffer zone is over 15,000 hectares with 18 villages in 7 communes in the districts of Mang Yang, Dak Doa, and Kbang of Gia Lai province. Kon Ka Linh National Park effectively conserves 2 rare pangolin species. These are 2 wild animals listed in the Red Book.

Along with efforts to effectively carry out the task of sustainable forest management and development, and support the Bahnar people in the buffer zone to improve their livelihoods, Kon Ka Kinh National Park has implemented many biodiversity conservation programs.

Not only enriching the "natural heritage" of the core zone of Kon Ha Nung Plateau World Biosphere Reserve, the above activities of Kon Ka Kinh National Park also contribute to tourism development.

People-centered

Kon Ka Kinh National Park has an area of nearly 42 thousand hectares, of which the buffer zone is more than 15 thousand hectares with 18 villages scattered across 7 communes in the districts of Mang Yang, Dak Doa, and Kbang.

Therefore, in addition to proactively developing a plan to protect the managed forest area, the unit's specialized forest protection force also coordinates with local authorities in propaganda, dissemination, and legal education to raise public awareness of forest protection; introduce the value, role, and benefits of the Park in particular and the Kon Ha Nung Plateau World Biosphere Reserve in general.

In addition, with the policy of investing in developing special-use forests to support buffer zone villages and hamlets each year with 720 million VND (40 million VND/village/hamlet) to buy seedlings, machinery, equipment for production, and materials for building public works, people have more conditions to develop production or invest in civil works to serve the community.

On the other hand, since 2013, Kon Ka Kinh National Park has also signed a contract to manage and protect forests with Bahnar communities in the buffer zone of about 8,000 hectares (unit price 200,000 VND/ha/year).

Up to now, the Park has expanded the contracted area to nearly 19,000 hectares with the payment unit price increasing to nearly 600 thousand VND/ha/year. The contract has gradually improved people's lives, changed their awareness and actions in forest protection.

In addition, Kon Ka Kinh National Park also proactively signed a project to implement technical support and nature conservation for the period 2022-2026 with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (Germany) in Vietnam.

Through its activities, the Project supports training in the application of SMART in forest protection patrols, monitoring endangered, precious and rare species; supports equipment and funding to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement in forest protection; organizes workshops and consults experts on the development orientation and management of sustainable ecotourism; promotes propaganda activities to raise awareness for people and students of schools in the buffer zone...

According to Dr. Ha Thang Long - Head of the Frankfurt Zoological Society Office in Vietnam: The project implements many activities to raise awareness for the community, especially in the buffer zone, about biodiversity and the value of natural resources of the reserve.

People will see this as an opportunity for them to be able to participate in the process of improving their quality of life and reducing their dependence on forests. Because according to UNESCO criteria, people are the focus of support from local authorities as well as stakeholders on improving their livelihoods.

“Kon Ka Kinh is the core area of a biosphere reserve containing very high biodiversity values that not every land has.

Therefore, we hope to both carry out the task of supporting and acting as a bridge with non-governmental organizations to provide financial resources to contribute to the sustainable conservation of forest ecosystems, biodiversity values and sustainable development activities in this area" - Dr. Ha Thang Long emphasized.

Biodiversity conservation associated with tourism development

Along with efforts to carry out the task of sustainable forest management, Kon Ka Kinh National Park also cooperates with domestic and international organizations and scientists to implement activities and projects on conservation and biodiversity.

Notably, the cooperation with the Frankfurt Zoological Society in Vietnam implemented the project "Supporting nature conservation in Kon Ka Kinh National Park" lasting from 2018 to 2023 on monitoring endangered and rare animal and plant species here.

The project has provided technical support, equipment and part of the funding for nature conservation; improved the capacity of staff in patrolling, scanning and monitoring biodiversity; and raised awareness among people and students in buffer zone communes.

In addition, under the ASEAN Heritage Parks Grants Program (SGPII), the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) has worked with Kon Ka Kinh National Park and agreed to select and implement a number of proposals to support units and buffer zones.

These proposals have now implemented small and micro-funding packages for people living in the buffer zone. The project organized the first call for small package proposals (from November 2022 to June 2023) and 6 small packages were approved; in addition, the second call for micro-package proposals in 2023, through which 13 proposed packages are in the process of being selected by the National Advisory Council.

Regarding research activities, Kon Ka Kinh National Park continues to coordinate research activities on topics and projects such as: "Investigation, statistics, and conservation of medicinal plant genetic resources in Kon Ka Kinh National Park"; technology transfer on the implementation of the task of "Research on conservation and sustainable development of medicinal plant genetic resources of Asparagus species"; "Developing a plan to restore the species of the rosewood tree, improving the conservation status and raising awareness of the local community about the conservation of rosewood species in the Park"...

Notably, recently, Kon Ka Kinh National Park also organized a workshop to develop a conservation plan for the newly discovered yellow pangolin and Javan pangolin species.

The unit leaders, along with experts, scientists, local authorities and functional forces, discussed solutions to closely coordinate and effectively implement the conservation of these two rare pangolin species. These are two animal species on the list of endangered, precious and rare species that are prioritized for protection according to regulations.

Mr. Ngo Van Thang - Director of Kon Ka Kinh National Park - informed: "The importance and biodiversity value of Kon Ka Kinh is extremely great, demonstrated through the discovery of many rare and precious species of wild animals and plants still existing here.

Species of flora and fauna that were previously difficult to see are now appearing more frequently and in larger numbers. For rare species, we conduct surveys and create basic distribution maps to determine better protection directions and ensure sustainability.

In addition, in 2023, the Garden also welcomed and guided 1,396 visitors (18 foreign visitors; 1,378 domestic visitors) to experience and learn.

Tourism activities here are gradually shaped and developed in the direction of eco-tourism based on natural values and landscapes with destinations such as: ancient banyan tree complex, Da Trang peak, Hngoi stream.

In particular, tourists not only get to "enjoy the values of nature" but also feel the values of the forest, thereby being more responsible for its protection and preservation.

“In the coming time, we will complete the project to develop ecotourism in Kon Ka Kinh National Park and submit it to the competent authority for approval, as a basis for implementing the development of ecotourism and community tourism. If done well, it will contribute to increasing income for local people participating in the tourism chain,” emphasized the Director of Kon Ka Kinh National Park.
