The eight-day exercise, called Soaring Eagle, began at an air base in Cheongju, 112 km south of the capital Seoul.
The announcement of the South Korean Air Force said that this exercise involved more than 160 soldiers and about 60 fighter jets, including F-35A stealth aircraft, F-15K, KF-16 and KC-330 tanker transport aircraft.
There are many different scenarios practiced such as infiltration by special forces and enemy aircraft, or cruise missile launches...
Also during this exercise, pilots will practice how to neutralize enemy targets such as mobile missile launchers and mobile artillery batteries in the shortest possible time.
Colonel Won Kwon-soo, commander of the exercise, said the purpose of the exercise is to equip the best rapid response capabilities and combat capabilities.
The Soaring Eagle exercise has been conducted once or twice a year by the South Korean Air Force since 2008. This time, the drills come amid tensions on the Korean Peninsula after Pyongyang launched a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile last month.
