Room occupancy rate increased sharply
According to the Hanoi Department of Tourism, Hanoi currently has 3,760 accommodation establishments with 71,246 rooms. Specifically, there are 607 hotels and apartment buildings ranked from 1 to 5 stars, with a total of 26,641 rooms. Since the beginning of the year, the number of visitors to and staying in Hanoi has increased. Specifically, in May 2024, the average room occupancy rate of the hotel sector reached 64.7%, an increase of 1.0% over the same period in 2023.
It is expected that in the first 6 months of the year, the average room occupancy rate of the hotel sector will reach 63.9%, an increase of 2.8% over the same period in 2023. Some 4-5 star hotels in the central area of Hanoi, such as Melia, Sheraton, Hilton Opera... will welcome many business groups in the form of MICE tourism.
Mr. Nguyen Tat Thanh - manager of Sunlight Hotel (18 Bao Khanh, Hoan Kiem) said that the number of guests staying at the hotel in the old quarter has been increasing steadily every month. Currently, the average room occupancy rate of Sunlight Hotel is about 50-60%, and on weekends it can reach 90-100% capacity.
In the suburban areas, high-end resorts such as: Lang Mit, Glory resort (Son Tay), Asean resort (Thach That); Medi Thien Son, Paragon resort (Ba Vi)... have a stable number of guests. Glory resort manager Do Van Tien informed that the room occupancy rate on weekends is about 80-90%, many times guests have to book in advance because there are no more rooms.
Discounts to stimulate tourism
In order to attract tourists in the summer and fall of 2024 and on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital (October 10), the Hanoi Department of Tourism organizes a stimulus program for Hanoians and tourists to experience services at 4-5 star hotels in the capital.
At the conference to stimulate Hanoians and tourists to experience services at 4-5 star hotels recently organized by the Hanoi Department of Tourism, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism Nguyen Hong Minh said that this program focuses on stimulating demand, attracting tourists and Hanoians to experience accommodation and use services at 4-5 star hotels in Hanoi. Accommodation establishments will launch programs and tourism product packages during the low season, thereby stimulating demand and attracting tourists to stay regularly and long-term.
"Hanoi is a leading market for sending tourists across the country and abroad. However, many Hanoians have not spent time learning about the capital where they live, nor have they tried to experience local tourism. In the near future, the capital will organize many activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital. This is an opportunity for accommodation establishments to welcome and retain guests to stay longer and spend more. Thereby, affirming that Hanoi tourism is safe, friendly, high-quality and attractive," Mr. Minh stated.
Responding to the program, many 4-5 star hotels have created incentive programs to attract tourists, especially people living in the capital. Silk Path Hotel Sales Director Nguyen Thanh Thuy said that located on the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake, Silk Path Hotel targets families, when children are on summer vacation. Therefore, the hotel offers a 15% discount, allows early check-in at 10am and late check-out at 2pm, so that guests have more time to experience.
Similarly, Pan Pacific Hanoi Hotel also organizes promotional programs during the summer, such as guests who book a room will receive a free upgrade to the next room category (applicable for stays of 3 nights or more), a welcome drink voucher at Song Hong Bar, a 15% discount when using the hotel's culinary services... In addition, guests who book 30 days in advance from the check-in date will receive a 10% discount on the room rate.
Director of Sales and Marketing of Movenpick Living West Hanoi Hotel Le Kim Thu informed that from now until October 10, 2024, the unit will launch the product "Happy Summer Vacation" with preferential prices, along with free upgrade to Suites room, free late check-out until 2:00 p.m. JW Marriot Hanoi Hotel offers a summer promotion program for families, with a price of 4.5 million VND/night with many services such as breakfast, afternoon tea.
In the suburbs of Hanoi, many luxury accommodations also have incentive programs for the summer. Melia Ba Vi Resort Manager Hoang Van Phuong said that the unit has implemented a policy that guests can experience many sightseeing activities, especially camping and team building for free. Glory Resort (Son Tay) has applied a discount program for some days to attract guests to stay longer.
Although hotels have organized room rate discount programs, according to tourism experts, in order to attract guests, in addition to discount policies, Hanoi needs to have more experiential tourism products to keep visitors staying longer.
Chairman of the Hanoi Tourism Association Nguyen Manh Than said that tourism businesses need to improve the quality of tourism products and organize more events to attract tourists. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen promotion activities to affirm the position as a tourist transit gateway of the whole country.
From the perspective of a travel agency, Deputy Director of Vietravel Company Pham Van Bay said that to attract tourists to stay longer and spend more, there needs to be a close “handshake” between airlines, hotels, travel agencies, and destinations, thereby creating tourism products with competitive prices and incentives to attract tourists. Hotels need to have updated, accurate information and preferential policies for travel agencies.
