Khac Viet's real name is Nguyen Khac Viet (born August 30, 1987), born and raised in Yen Bai, in a family with no one in the arts, his parents were civil servants. After finishing high school, Khac Viet and his younger brother Khac Hung passed the entrance exam to the Hanoi Conservatory of Music (now the National Academy of Music) in 2005.
Graduated from the Vocal Music Department, but Khac Viet chose to follow the path of music composition right from the beginning of his artistic career when he released his first song titled "Quen" in 2009.
In a conversation with Dan Tri reporter, Khac Viet opened up for the first time about his past of working part-time while singing to earn money, sometimes just eating bread, raw instant noodles or sticky rice to run shows...
Having gone through the peak and the stormy days, Khac Viet is now a real estate boss and has a happy, peaceful life with his beautiful wife and two children. The male artist turned to meditation to practice peace of mind and create positive energy for himself.

Had an accident while running a show
When mentioning Khac Viet, audiences born in the late 80s and early 90s know by heart a series of hits such as "Love again from the beginning", "Are you different?", "Toi cho co gai ay"... During his peak, his salary must have been very high?
- After becoming more known to the audience, my salary increased, but not too high. The first day I sang, it could be 500 thousand to 1 million, 2 million. Later, it could go up to several tens of millions. When I maintain stability and trajectory, my salary will be enough to spend and save a little (laughs).
At that time, Vietnam's economy was entering a period of development, there were very few events, mainly performances at bars and fairs. The highest salary I received was not domestic but for performing abroad.
At that time, I literally ran shows without a clear schedule. The record was that I ran 4 shows in one night.
In the 2010s, Khac Viet continuously had hit songs (Photo: character's Facebook).
Have you ever experienced danger while performing so much?
- In 2012, I was driving from Ha Nam to Nam Dinh to perform a show when I got into an accident. A show started at 8am, finished at 8:30am and my assistant had to leave very quickly to be at another show by 10:30am. My car flipped over because it crashed into a house, damaged the front of the car and broke their water tank. Luckily, I was okay, but from then on I decided not to repeat this and not to sing at fairs anymore.
He once confided about the difficulties when he first started his career. Accordingly, in the past, due to difficult family circumstances, Khac Viet - a young man from the countryside had to struggle, both studying and working. He used to sell gasoline and sing as a backup singer for many years, and even the songs he composed were forced to be sold at cheap prices, just enough to buy instant noodles and pay rent... What is the truth of this?
- Everything starts with fate. I think we are born and come to life to have different lessons. When I studied vocal music at the Conservatory, no one believed I could compose.
But after studying, I knew that it was the shortest way for me to approach singers. From then on, I started composing myself and had songs that were well received by the audience. Therefore, besides fate, I also need to have clear plans for myself.
At that time, I was like many other students, both studying and working. A friend asked for me to sing as a backup singer in many places, the fee was about one hundred thousand, some nights only a few tens of thousands. There was a time when I sang for a whole month in Quang Binh but I was in debt, it took me a long time to have money to take the bus home.
In my third year of study, my parents asked me to work as a gas inspector in Vinh Phuc. I also went back and forth constantly to have time to sing. At that time, I didn't think about it, now life is better, thinking back, I see how miserable it is.

I still remember the years 2008-2012, wherever I went I saw people playing Khac Viet's hit songs. How did that popularity change and create a turning point for you?
- I think success depends on many factors such as space, time, and the person inside to support my thinking and composing. For a certain period of time, I only focus on music and composing, without seeking anything. When things go naturally, everything will be successful and vice versa.
Back then, I didn't know I was famous. I remember when I released the song "Quen" , I went to Hanoi, some people saw me and said: "That's Khac Viet". I thought they were mistaken, pretended to forget something and walked around again to see if it was true, and people really recognized me (laughs).
At that time, everything was very simple, the singer sang the night before, the next day the pirated CD sold on the market could make you famous right away. I participated in the program The World of Vpop of Quang Huy and The World of Teen , in which I sang the song S uy nghi trong anh . The next day at the flea market, I saw the CD being sold everywhere, that's when I knew I was famous.
In the past, wherever I went, I could tell how popular my songs were by watching ITV and listening to them. Nowadays, social media is so developed, the public has many options for listening to music, and music products are released constantly. But what comes quickly also goes quickly, that is the inevitable rule.
I consider music as my destiny and my mission. It has changed my material life, brought me fame, allowed me to meet and make friends with many people, allowed me to travel, broaden my mind... I thank life for allowing me to do art, giving me many things and I will definitely repay it.
"When I decided to get married, many female fans cried"
What do your family and friends say about your fame?
- My parents said: "In the countryside, many people listen and watch your work." My parents were very happy. In the past, my brother and I were famous in the whole neighborhood because we passed the entrance exam to the Conservatory of Music. After that, my fame also surprised everyone.
At your peak, how much of your time did your busy work take up?
- I need to be active and work a lot, so I don't feel pressured about balancing my time. At that time, I was doing what I liked, had income, was famous, and had audiences who loved me, so I was very happy. It was when I was working that I was relaxing.
You also went through busy periods, didn't have time to eat, was it normal to eat bread or raw instant noodles?
- Every profession has its difficulties, not just artists. In the past, I lived in Yen Bai, my house was often flooded but I also found it simple, I did not feel the difficulties. Because everyone born in the countryside is the same, many people are more miserable than me, sometimes having money does not necessarily end the suffering. Each person has their own circumstances, you cannot use your own difficulties as a measure.
Singing and composing at the same time, your hits swept through all the big and small shows, with a large number of fans. Back then, did many female fans confess their love to you? Do you have any happy or emotional memories with your fans?
- Everyone gave me a lot of love. When I performed, the audience gave me teddy bears, wrote letters, sent emails, asked for autographs… When I decided to get married, many female fans cried.
Wherever I go, people help me. Once, when I was on tour, I got stuck in the US because I was at the wrong terminal or on the wrong flight. People recognized me and helped me. When I returned home, people also asked to take a few pictures with me. I was very comfortable because everything was in moderation.
I do not use my reputation for business.
There are rumors about his wealth, but is it from real estate?
- Honestly, my income is mostly from real estate. But I don't dare to say I'm rich, nor do I advertise it in the media. A normal person's life will have needs for a house, a car, money for children to go to school, 3-4 life insurance policies...
If life is only about money, it's boring. I increase my income for other purposes and to fulfill my mission for music. To do that, I must have good cash flow and economic foundation.
I use my kind heart as an artist to do business. Real estate needs kinder and more caring people. Getting rich by trickery will definitely bring bad consequences.
I have fans, they bought the house and then found out it was my product, I don't use my reputation for business.
What is the difference between the life of an artist and a real estate business owner?
- The most difficult thing for a businessman is to control himself and his emotions. Currently, I do everything during the day and do not stay up late. I usually wake up at 6am every day to meditate. If I am not busy, I will stay at home reading books and meditating, or go out with my friends.
How has meditation changed you?
- I have been meditating for over a year, perhaps partly due to fate. Training the mind is the most difficult thing to control your mind, behavior, and speech.
Meditation is the root of Buddhism, helping us know where we are wrong, have less delusions, and accumulate strong resources within ourselves. My wife also started practicing meditation. I hang out with Ms. Thanh Lam and Mr. Tung Duong - people who have also been meditating for a long time.
As a real estate owner, do you miss the limelight?
- I have a music live show in Ho Chi Minh City. This time, I will do it more as a business. As for whether I remember or not, those are memories and I do not cling to the past.
I no longer have to worry about making a living, so I have more time for myself. I still sing on suitable stages. Because I am afraid of noise and like quiet, I will not perform at bars or clubs anymore.
"I'm not a womanizer anymore"
How has your life changed after marriage?
- After having a child, I changed a lot. Before, I always wanted my wife to change with me, but I realized that I had to be the one to do it first. Before, I was very hot-tempered and often spoke out on social media, but now I am more and more reserved.
When we first got married, my husband and I often argued because we had to change many habits. Our children were the invisible bridge between us, helping me become a person who knows how to take care of my family.
Now I am very happy because I can balance everything, not depend on anyone, without any barriers or external influences.
Being a famous multi-talented artist, now the president of a real estate company. Are there any situations where you made your wife jealous?
- No. I only have a relationship with my current wife, no more flirting.
In your family, who is considered the roof of the house?
- Whoever is the roof of the house is fine. I am not afraid of my wife, but living together we must understand, respect and be sincere with each other.
What is your secret to making your wife accept sacrificing her career to take care of the family?
- As a successful man, my wife will definitely make changes to balance the family. After working for a while, my wife is now at home with the children. Now I will invest in a business model for her to own and operate.
What do you love most about your wife?
- Thao is very hard-working, not demanding, and knows how to save. Besides, my wife is definitely very pretty (laughs).
