Israel and Hezbollah accuse each other of violating ceasefire

VTC NewsVTC News29/11/2024

According to Reuters , the Israeli military said its air force attacked a Hezbollah medium-range missile storage facility in southern Lebanon on November 28.

This is the first time Israel has carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon since a ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect on November 27.

Lebanese security sources and Al Jadeed television said the Israeli air strike targeted targets near Baysariyah, north of the Litani River.

The ceasefire agreement stipulates that illegal military installations south of the Litani River must be dismantled, but does not mention military installations north of the river.

The Lebanese army accused Israel of violating the ceasefire several times on November 27 and 28.

Lebanese state media and security sources said Israeli tanks hit five towns and several agricultural fields in southern Lebanon, wounding two people.

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah accused Israel of attacking people returning to border villages.

All areas are within 2 km of the Green Line that demarcates the border between Lebanon and Israel, in an area that the Israeli military declared a no-go zone along the border, even after the deal was agreed.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it had identified a number of suspicious activities that posed a threat and violated the conditions of the ceasefire agreement.

"Any violation of this agreement will be met with fire," said Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare for intense fighting if the ceasefire was violated.

"We are taking the ceasefire seriously," Netanyahu said in an interview with Israel's Channel 14. "But I have instructed the IDF to be prepared in case the ceasefire is violated, leading to intense fighting."

Lebanese families displaced from their homes near the southern border are trying to return to check on their property. However, Reuters noted that Israeli troops remain stationed inside Lebanon in towns along the border and surveillance drones fly over some areas in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli army on November 28 extended the curfew, restricting the movement of residents in southern Lebanon, south of the Litani River, from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day.

The exchange of accusations underscores the fragility of the ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France to end the conflict that has been raging alongside the 13-month war in Gaza. The 60-day ceasefire is expected to bring a permanent end to the Israel-Lebanon cross-border conflict.
