Lebanese media reported that residents received text messages asking them to immediately keep a distance of 1,000 meters from any positions used by Hezbollah until further notice.
According to Lebanese media, the Arabic message read: "If you are in the Hezbollah weapons building, leave the village until further notice."
Lebanon's Information Minister Ziad Makary said his office in Beirut had received a recorded message asking people to leave the building, but said the ministry would not do so. "This is psychological warfare," Makary said, urging people "not to pay more attention to this than necessary."
It is not yet clear how many people will be affected by Israel's order. Communities on both sides of the border have largely fled because of near-daily fighting.
It was the first warning of “expanded attacks” in nearly a year of conflict. On September 22, Hezbollah launched about 150 rockets, ballistic missiles and drones into northern Israel in retaliation for attacks that killed a senior commander and dozens of militants.
There is no sign of an immediate exodus from villages in southern Lebanon.
Earlier, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said airstrikes on homes in Lebanon where "Hezbollah hides weapons" were imminent.
In a televised statement, Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari issued a similar warning. Asked about the possibility of an Israeli ground attack on Lebanon, Hagari said “we will do everything necessary” to bring evacuees from northern Israel back to their homes safely.
Israeli warplanes recently launched a series of heavy airstrikes on towns along Lebanon's southern border and even further north on the morning of September 23.
Hezbollah's al-Manar TV reported that Israeli air strikes targeted the outskirts of several towns and villages in the south as well as the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. Footage showed plumes of smoke rising in the south.
At least one person was killed and six wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the Hermel area in northeastern Lebanon, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. Another 11 people were wounded in an airstrike on the southern Lebanese town of Aitarun, the ministry said.
