(Dan Tri) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will become the first international leader to visit the White House after US President Donald Trump takes office for a second term.
US President Donald Trump has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit the White House on February 4 to "discuss ways to bring peace to Israel and its neighbors and work together against our common enemies."
"I would be honored to have you as the first foreign leader to visit the White House during my second term," Trump wrote in a letter to the Israeli prime minister.
Mr Trump said he did not believe the ceasefire in Gaza would hold. Under the terms of the truce, Israel and Hamas will soon begin negotiating a lasting peace that many fear will fail and lead to a return to bloodshed after more than 15 months of fighting.
Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu have a difficult personal relationship, but Israel remains America's closest ally in the region.
Steve Witkoff, Mr Trump's Middle East envoy, is said to have had tense conversations with Mr Netanyahu days before the hostage-for-ceasefire deal negotiated between Hamas and Israel.
Mr Trump later lifted a ban on supplying Israel with heavy bombs imposed by his predecessor Joe Biden's administration last year in protest at Israel's excessive military use in the Gaza Strip.
