Pro versions of iPhones over the years have often offered users some advantages over the non-Pro versions. The iPhone 16 generation is no exception, opting for the Pro version offers many superior features.
However, some people may not think the few hundred dollars difference is worth upgrading to the Pro version.
With both models now available, here are the points users should pay attention to when comparing these two iPhones before buying.
Specifications
Physical dimensions
In previous years, the standard iPhone and the Pro version were roughly the same size. But that's no longer true in 2024.
The iPhone 16 measures 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro is longer but narrower at 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.25 mm.
The difference in physical size, along with the other components of the Pro version, also makes the iPhone 16 Pro heavier. At 199 grams, the iPhone 16 Pro is about 29 grams heavier than the iPhone 16 (170 grams).
The design of both models is quite similar, with a metal frame and glass front. The iPhone 16 uses an aluminum frame, while the iPhone 16 Pro uses a titanium frame, a more sturdy material than the aluminum frame of the standard version.
Both lines have an Action button instead of a mute button on the side like before. The similarities also include a new camera control button, allowing users to quickly take photos and change settings.
Screen
While the previous models have the same screen size, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro differ in terms of display. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 16 Pro has a larger 6.3-inch display.
The size difference also results in a resolution difference, but not by much. The iPhone 16 has a resolution of 2,556 x 1,179, while the Pro is 2,622 x 1,206.
The Pro version has slightly more pixels, but the pixel density is the same at 460 pixels per inch.
Both iPhones support wide color (P3), True Tone, and can reach a peak brightness of 2,000 nits for outdoor use. The 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio is also identical.
The Pro version's display is superior thanks to some special features like ProMotion, a technology that allows flexible refresh rates of up to 120Hz.
The non-Pro version doesn't have ProMotion, so it's stuck with a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz and no always-on display feature.
Camera
The difference between the two versions is obvious in the number of cameras. The Pro version has 3 rear cameras, while the standard version only has 2.
Both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro feature a Fusion camera (main camera), with a 48MP sensor, the iPhone 16 has a wider aperture at f/1.6 compared to the iPhone 16 Pro's 1.78.
Both feature sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a virtual camera that enables 2x optical zoom. The second camera is an Ultra Wide, but the iPhone 16 Pro has an upgraded 48MP sensor, while the iPhone 16 uses a 12MP version. This means users can get more detail in wide shots taken on the Pro line.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro has Telephoto, this time with a Tetraprism lens in both sizes, so it's capable of 5x optical zoom.
Both lines have TrueTone flash, Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion computational photography, Portrait mode, Picture Style, Macro, Space Photo, and Night mode. The 16 Pro supports Apple ProRAW images.
When it comes to video, the iPhone 16 Pro once again has some significant advantages. Users can shoot 4K Dolby Vision video at 60fps on the standard iPhone 16, but can shoot at 120fps on the Pro. Both still benefit from 1080p Slo-Mo at 240fps.
Cinematic mode is available on both cameras, as is Action mode, 1080p Space Video, Macro, and Time Lapse modes. However, the Pro version adds support for ProRes video recording, log video recording, and many other professional features, suitable for creative enthusiasts.
The 12MP TrueDepth front camera is identical between the two models, with 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 60fps, slow-motion at 1080p 120fps, and Cinematic mode at 30fps. The Pro has the advantage of supporting ProRes video at up to 4K 60fps.
Performance
Both iPhone lines use the A18 chip, but the iPhone 16 Pro is equipped with the A18 Pro with more powerful performance, especially in graphics processing and multitasking.
In Geekbench performance tests, the Pro version scored slightly higher (3,283) than the standard version (3,095), but the difference was not too big. Likewise, the multi-core scores for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro pair were 7,134 vs. 7,874, respectively.
Connect
Both versions support 5G, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 3. The only difference is that the Pro version's USB-C port has data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps, while the iPhone 16 only reaches 480MB/s.
When it comes to satellite-based connectivity, both iPhone tiers offer the same features.
Battery capacity
The iPhone 16 has up to 22 hours of battery life when watching video, while the Pro version can last up to 27 hours.
Both support fast charging and MagSafe wireless charging for wireless charging at up to 25W or 15W with Qi2 or 7.5W with Qi.
Both can fast charge over USB-C, with each able to get a 50% charge in about half an hour with a 20W adapter.
Color and price
The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 for the 128GB version, rising to $1,099 for the 256GB model, $1,299 for the 512GB model, and $1,499 for the 1TB model.
While the iPhone 16 starts at $799 for the 128GB model, $899 for the 256GB model, and $1,099 for the 512GB model.
The Pro version comes in colors like Natural Titanium, Black Titanium, White Titanium, and Desert Titanium, while the iPhone 16 comes in more color options like Black, White, Pink, Blue, and Green.
Is it worth upgrading?
Clearly, the iPhone 16 Pro is a superior device when compared to the iPhone 16. However, the question is, is it worth spending an extra $200?
If you need professional video and photography features or want the most advanced version, the iPhone 16 Pro is a reasonable choice. But if you just need a powerful and economical phone, the iPhone 16 is still a great choice.
