More than one million e-cigarettes are thrown away every day in the UK

(CLO) According to a recent study, in the UK, up to 13 e-cigarettes are thrown away every second, equivalent to more than one million cigarettes per day, causing an "environmental nightmare".

Additionally, long-lasting e-cigarettes (vapes) are becoming increasingly popular. These devices can hold up to 6,000 puffs per use, while conventional disposable vapes only hold around 600 puffs.

According to research commissioned by Material Focus and conducted by Opinium, approximately 3 million long-lasting vapes are purchased each week, while 8.2 million vapes are discarded or improperly recycled each week.

From June 2025, the sale of disposable e-cigarettes will be banned in the UK. This is a measure to reduce the environmental impact and prevent children from using e-cigarettes. Accordingly, e-cigarettes will only be allowed to be sold if they are rechargeable or have refillable cartridges.

However, all vapes contain lithium-ion batteries, which are dangerous if damaged or crushed, as they can cause fires in waste vehicles or recycling centres. E-cigarette fires are on the rise across the UK, with a 71% increase since 2022.

Environmentalists also warn that e-cigarettes waste resources and damage ecosystems because they contain valuable materials such as lithium and copper, but these materials are often thrown away in the trash.

Material Focus estimates that the amount of e-cigarettes discarded each year could generate enough energy to power 10,127 electric cars. Additionally, e-cigarettes can harm wildlife if they are left out, which is often the case.
