On July 29, the People's Committee of Hoi An City (Quang Nam Province) announced that on the occasion of the inauguration of the Chua Cau relic restoration project on August 3, the city will publish a book called "Restoration of Chua Cau relic".

Accordingly, the book contains the entire dossier of the restoration process of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic, compiled, compiled and published by the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation.

The book hopes to provide managers, scientists, experts, tourists from near and far, and Hoi An residents with a thorough, insightful view and a better understanding of the restoration process of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic.

At the same time, this is also an important database for today's and future generations in conservation and promotion management.

Previously, on July 25, after nearly 20 months of restoration, the entire iron frame and corrugated iron roof covering the bridge pagoda was dismantled.

The new look of the Japanese Covered Bridge after restoration has received mixed opinions about its fresh paint color. Many people believe that this paint color destroys the ancient beauty of the iconic structure in Hoi An.

According to Hoi An City People's Committee, since its construction, the Japanese Covered Bridge has been restored at least 7 times in 1763, 1817, 1875, 1915, 1962, 1986, and 1996.

Japanese Covered Bridge before and after restoration.

Due to the increasingly serious deterioration of the Japanese Covered Bridge, on August 16, 2016, an international conference on the restoration of the Japanese Covered Bridge was held on a large scale with the participation of many scientists and leading experts on the restoration of wooden architectural relics in the country and Japan.

Although the Workshop did not provide solutions for each specific problem, it reached a consensus on the general view that it is necessary and urgent for the Japanese Covered Bridge to have a comprehensive and fundamental restoration project with the goal of preserving the intact and long-term value of the relic.

Since then, the preparation work for the restoration of the Japanese Covered Bridge has been focused on promoting many aspects of historical, cultural, architectural and artistic research; surveying and archaeologically assessing the technical status and original traces; drawing and digitizing architecture; determining viewpoints, principles and restoration solutions; consulting with experts; organizing, agreeing and approving documents...

On December 28, 2022, the Japanese Covered Bridge began its restoration with the viewpoint and restoration solution throughout the project being to preserve the integrity of the overall architectural form and structure, each part, component, and original artifact with historical value is treasured and preserved to the maximum extent possible.

According to Hoi An City People's Committee, nearly 60% of the wood volume, nearly 30% of the tiles, 80% of the ancient plates, 20% of the stone foundation structures, 35% of the decorative animals on the roof... were preserved and relocated at the relic after restoration.

Regarding the final color of the Japanese Covered Bridge after restoration, Hoi An City People's Committee said that it was decided to keep the original color of all wooden components, including decorative carvings, horizontal lacquered boards, and parallel sentences, without any additional painting; replacement components or reinforcement components will only be coated with a colorless preservative. Similar to the abutment body, the bridge piers will also be completely kept intact without any color intervention.

Hoi An City People's Committee added that the restoration of color, no matter what, cannot avoid making the relic look new, but more importantly, it has preserved its originality, ensuring the principles in the restoration of the relic in accordance with the inherent nature of the relic.

However, based on comments from residents and tourists in recent days, Hoi An City leaders said they are assigning the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center to repaint the structure to match the old color of the Japanese Covered Bridge.

It is known that the project to restore the Chua Cau relic has a total investment of more than 20.2 billion VND. Of which, the Quang Nam provincial budget supports 50%, and the Hoi An city budget allocates 50%.

The project is invested by Hoi An City People's Committee, implemented by Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, and the Monuments Conservation Consulting Center - Monuments Conservation Institute is the consulting unit.
