Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), shared in the Exam Season Consulting program of Thanh Nien Newspaper this morning.
This morning (January 27), the 26th Exam Season Consulting program organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training took place at Dong Nai University.
The program attracted about 9,000 12th grade students from many high schools to participate directly. Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training and more than 50 universities and colleges participating in the program will provide useful information to students. The program received many questions expressing candidates' concerns in choosing a career.
The program is broadcast live on thanhnien.vn , facebook.com/thanhnien and YouTube Thanh Nien Newspaper.
Asking a direct question at the program, a student from Nam Ha High School (Dong Nai) wondered: "Is it true that university degrees are currently being inflated? There is information that there are many universities and a large number of students graduating every year, causing many people to be unsteady in the process of finding a job. We are about to finish 12 years of high school and are about to spend 4-5 years in university. In the future, we may have to compete with graduates from advanced universities in the world... So what should we do if we are not really excellent?".
What does the Ministry of Education and Training respond to when students worry that too many people are going to university?
Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Thu Thuy assessed the question as good and asked the opposite question: "If you do not study, where will the country go? If we stop studying, how backward will we be?". Associate Professor, Dr. Thu Thuy added: "I do not put too much emphasis on us having a university degree because it is like a certificate to enter the labor market. But having a university or college degree does not mean stopping studying, but we must study for life. If we do not study and do not master ourselves, we will lose the opportunity to join better people."
In response to information that Vietnam has too many university students, Ms. Thuy affirmed: "Vietnam's university enrollment rate is currently very low compared to the world, only 210-215 students/10,000 people, while other countries have been at 300-400 students/10,000 people for a long time." Citing an example from the education sector, the Department Head said: "We are extremely lacking in PhDs even in the human resources team in the education sector."
"It is true that the rate of university students is higher than before, but this is an opportunity for more people to study at university. You have to study because if you do not study, you will be eliminated from the labor market. There is still information in the world about a lack of highly qualified human resources because the labor market increasingly requires highly qualified human resources," Associate Professor, Dr. Thu Thuy added.
Inspiring young people to study, the Director of the Department of Higher Education added: "4 years of university is not enough, you need to continue studying. Learning a trade is also studying. Study to contribute more to society, don't be afraid of not having a position for yourself. There are positions for talented people but we also need intermediaries to support the top positions."
For those who did not choose the right career from the beginning, Ms. Thuy said that the change is still necessary despite many challenges, time and effort. With the current training regulations, students can study a second major, transfer schools or change training fields... "It may take more effort but don't give up," the Department Head added.
Thousands of students attended the Exam Season Consulting program of Thanh Nien Newspaper this morning.
What's new in the 2024 graduation exam and admissions?
Also in the program, Director of the Department of Higher Education Nguyen Thu Thuy said that in 2024, the Ministry of Education and Training will not issue new regulations on university and college admissions for preschool education. Instead, the current admission regulations issued and applied from 2022 will continue to be effective this year. The Ministry of Education and Training only has minor technical adjustments to the Ministry's general admission system to ensure the rights of candidates. Basically, the admission process will remain stable from 2023 to this year, the role of schools and the Ministry is to support candidates, so that candidates have the best rights.
The Department Head said that the Ministry has a draft circular amending and supplementing the regulations on high school graduation exams. This draft has not changed much compared to last year, only updating some foreign language certificates to make it more convenient for students. "After the Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry will issue unified regulations with the spirit of maintaining stability and not affecting this year's students. At this time, candidates can refer to the timelines of last year," added Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education.
