On August 22, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony to award Nguyen Huu Tho scholarships and support study expenses for ethnic minority students and students with difficult circumstances in Ho Chi Minh City.

The ceremony took place at Nguyen Huu Tho High School (District 4), as part of a series of events to welcome the 12th Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front of the City (term 2024-2029), contributing to the implementation of the sustainable poverty reduction program for the period 2021-2025.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee, acknowledged and thanked the attention and support of the units accompanying the Nguyen Huu Tho scholarship program for students in difficult circumstances.

According to Mr. Tuan, studying is the way to escape poverty sustainably, so the work of encouraging learning, supporting and caring for students in difficult circumstances is one of the top concerns of the Party Committee, government, Fatherland Front and socio-political organizations of Ho Chi Minh City.

On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee - the City's "For the Poor" Fund Mobilization, Management and Use Board awarded 2,320 Nguyen Huu Tho scholarships to disadvantaged students in the area, with a total value of more than 5 billion VND.

Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fatherland Front Committee, said that the new feature in the activities of the Nguyen Huu Tho Scholarship Fund this school year will be to continue sponsoring 30 students with an amount of 5 million VND each. The Fund Management Board will re-evaluate the sponsorship effectiveness, and have connecting activities so that students receiving scholarships have the conditions to develop. At the same time, there will be a connection to create a living environment to recognize the effectiveness of the Nguyen Huu Tho scholarship.

Le Huynh Trung Hieu, a second-year student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, said: His family's circumstances were difficult, his father died early, Hieu was raised by his grandmother, so receiving the Nguyen Huu Tho scholarship helped him overcome difficulties and continue his studies.

Hieu shared: "The Nguyen Huu Tho scholarship has helped me a lot because tuition fees are increasing. My dream and plan for the future is to help my family become better, without the burden of making a living anymore. The only thing that can help me overcome adversity is to try and study hard."

In addition to the scholarships, 200 million VND worth of study support funds were also awarded to 100 ethnic minority students in difficult circumstances in Ho Chi Minh City, each worth 2 million VND. This amount was mobilized by Mr. Truong Hoa Binh - former Politburo member, former Permanent Deputy Prime Minister of the Government and the Management Board of Scholarships to Support Ethnic Minority Students of the Newspaper Nguoi Lao Dong.

As one of the typical examples of overcoming difficulties to study well, Si Ti Mi Na - Cham ethnic, studying at Saigon South Polytechnic College has received financial support for her studies from junior high school until now.

Mi Na expressed: “My mother passed away in 2021 due to COVID-19, my father had to bear all the burden by himself, so I want to study to help my father. I want to have a stable job to take care of myself and help my father to some extent.”

The Nguyen Huu Tho scholarship program is organized by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee - the Board of Mobilization, Management and Use of the "For the Poor" Fund in Ho Chi Minh City. Starting in 2001, the program has cared for and supported hundreds of thousands of students with difficult circumstances, almost having to drop out of school, to continue going to school. Thanks to that, it has contributed to reducing the rate of students repeating a grade, dropping out of school, helping them continue studying, gradually improving.
