Mysterious lake in Thung cave suddenly drops 2m in water in just a few days, even though it's still raining - Photo: L.DUNG
On May 24, Mr. Le Luu Dung, director of Jungle Boss Company Limited (Bo Trach, Quang Binh) said that the company's expedition team had just returned to the mysterious lake in Thung Cave, in the strictly protected area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.
However, a strange phenomenon is that in just a few days, the water level in this lake has dropped 2m. Notably, the water level has dropped even though it has rained around the cave in recent days.
The unit's expedition team has yet to find the inlet and outlet of the lake. But through initial surveys, the depth of the lake could be up to more than 10m.
The suspicion is that the bottom of the lake is connected to an underground river. The water level of this underground river is also high enough to create enough pressure for the water in the lake to rise and fall when it is in a position that seems to "hang" on the cave wall.

In addition, when the water receded, the expedition team discovered a stalactite that seemed to have fallen from the cave ceiling and floated on the lake surface.
"Our expedition team has many years of experience in the cave system of Hung Thoong valley, which is part of the strictly protected area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, but has never seen such a rapid change in the lake's water level," said Mr. Dung.
Previously, on May 10, Mr. Le Luu Dung, director of Jungle Boss Company Limited, said that the survey team of this unit had just discovered a mysterious lake in a branch of Thung Cave, part of the Hung Thoong Cave system.
What's special is that this lake is located about 15m higher than the main underground river in the cave, so the lake seems to "hang" on the cave wall.
Observing with the naked eye, this lake is located about a kilometer from the cave entrance and has a surface area of several hundred square meters. Surrounding the lake are stalactites.
The survey team has not been able to measure the depth of the lake because they do not have enough diving equipment. The team has also not found the source of water flowing into this mysterious lake.
Because of the lake's unique location, the survey team has temporarily named the lake Suspended Lake.
Quang Binh Province Department of Tourism said it will have to survey the lake's technical indicators and only allow exploitation if it is safe.
