More than a year ago, Luis de la Fuente was caught in a storm when he could lose his job after Spain lost 0-2 to Scotland in the EURO 2024 qualifiers.
De la Fuente publicly admitted his mistakes and asked for forgiveness. At the same time, he had faith in himself and his team, determined to fight for the future.
Today, De la Fuente is part of Spanish football history, having won EURO 2024 after beating England 2-1, the team's fourth European Championship.
De la Fuente succeeded in building "La Roja" into more than a football team. They are a real family, with joy and everyone being together.
In the football museum, De la Fuente's name is written next to three legends who have led Spain to the EURO title before: Jose Villalonga (1964), Luis Aragones (2008) and Vicente del Bosque (2012).
The EURO 2024 championship in Berlin also puts De la Fuente in an unprecedented position among coaches in UEFA's national team competitions.
Accordingly, the 63-year-old coach won 4 championships with different Spanish versions in the official UEFA system, after U19 (2015), U21 (2019) and Nations League (2022-23).
In addition, in the collection of 6 international titles, De la Fuente also has a gold medal in football at the 2018 Mediterranean Games (with U19), and a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics.
"You couldn't be happier," De la Fuente said before joining his students on the podium to receive their awards.
"We are a real team, European champions, every day I am more and more proud of them. Thank you to all the Spanish people for their support."
"Nothing, it's a matter of consolidating what we have, it's a matter of belief," De la Fuente said in response to a question about what he said to the players at half-time.
"The players know how to interpret every action of the game. They are the best in the world. I said it and I confirm this. The advantage of the team is that we can always get better."
