"Sooner or later, at some point, we have to get used to playing without Kylian Mbappe. He will play if he is fit, or not, or he will be replaced, as all coaches do," coach Luis Enrique emphasized, after PSG drew 1-1 with Rennes in round 23 of Ligue 1, on February 26.
Coach Luis Enrique surprised everyone when he replaced Mbappe in the 65th minute, when PSG were trailing Rennes 1-0 (Gouiri scored in the 33rd minute) and were in dire need of a goal to equalize. Instead, the Spanish coach sent striker Goncalo Ramos to replace Mbappe. It was Goncalo Ramos who scored the equalizer for PSG in the 90+7 minutes of stoppage time from the penalty spot.
Meanwhile, Mbappe was not happy at all when he was substituted in the middle of the match. The 25-year-old French star did not go to the PSG fan area to greet him after the match as usual. PSG fans booed the player when he was substituted, even though they had encouraged the French star at the beginning of the match.
"The news that Mbappe decided to leave PSG has been around since December 2023, along with news that almost confirmed that this star reached an agreement to join Real Madrid in the summer. It shows that PSG's hope of keeping him is almost zero. Therefore, Mbappe's role at PSG from now until the end of the season will likely be greatly reduced," said Marca (Spain).
"I want maximum competition for next season. I want all the main players of PSG to think that this is a great opportunity (without Mbappe). I am doing that this season, right now and preparing the best for next season," coach Luis Enrique expressed, when explaining the decision to replace Mbappe to create opportunities for other players to play.
"With the moves taking place, Mbappe's farewell to PSG is closer than ever. Mbappe must also accept the decisions of coach Luis Enrique, after he has also made his decision to prepare to go to Real Madrid," Marca shared.
