Defense Minister Minoru Kihara told a news conference that the cause of the accident was under investigation.

Kihara Minoru said rescuers had found parts believed to be from two military helicopters in the sea. Initial information suggested that the two helicopters may have crashed.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) and the Coast Guard are searching for the remaining seven crew members.

Earlier on Saturday, MSDF Chief of Staff Yoshitaka Sakai said there was no involvement from another country in the accident.

In a post on X, US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel offered assistance in search and rescue efforts.
