According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian Navy exercise involved 20,000 servicemen and 300 ships, aiming to test the readiness and capabilities of the navy at all levels.
The drills will include more than 300 combat exercises, including practice using anti-aircraft missiles, artillery, anti-submarine weapons and "passive interference", the statement added.
"Units and formations of the Russian Navy have begun conducting planned exercises in the areas of operations of the Northern, Pacific and Baltic Fleets, as well as in the area of responsibility of the Caspian Flotilla," the ministry said.

The main purpose of the exercise is to check the performance of naval forces at all levels, as well as the readiness of ship crews, naval aviation units and coastal forces of the Russian Navy to perform tasks.
The ministry said about 300 warships and boats, submarines and support vessels, about 50 aircraft and more than 200 units of military equipment will take part in combat training.
Russia has also conducted a series of tactical nuclear weapons exercises over the past two months. Russia has also stepped up military training with Belarus, which shares borders with both Russia and Ukraine, with a series of comprehensive exercises.
The Russian Navy outperforms the world's leading navies in a number of parameters, said Viktor Yevtukhov, director of government policy in the defense sector of Russia.
"In terms of competition among the world's navies, I think we are the strongest. I am sure of this because I have been in charge of shipbuilding, primarily military shipbuilding, for many years. I can say that we are far ahead of the world's leading navies in many aspects and we can be proud of that," he said in an interview.
