Thanh Son District Women's Union visited and gave savings books to two children of teachers who were victims of an accident in Ha Giang.

“Godmother” is a program launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women’s Union during the post-COVID-19 peak period to support the care and nurturing of orphans affected by the pandemic. Later, the program was expanded to include orphans for other reasons.

The “godmothers” in the program will support children in difficult circumstances, creating conditions for them to develop comprehensively in the family and community environment, and carry out practical activities to ensure children's rights according to the law.

The Association at all levels plays a connecting role between “godmothers” and children, monitors policy implementation, participates in advocacy, coordinates support resources, ensures fairness, and effectively uses resources. The program also emphasizes the task of supporting care, emotional and spiritual counseling, and ensuring safety for children in the family and community environment.

On May 3, after the holiday, teacher Nguyen Dai Dinh Nam, his wife, teacher Mai Thi Yen, and their 4-year-old daughter traveled from their hometown in Phu Tho to the mountainous commune of Duong Thuong (Yen Minh district, Ha Giang) to return to school. When they were only 2 km away from the school, their motorbike had an accident due to a slippery slope, and the whole family plunged into a deep ravine.

Colleagues and villagers discovered the three people and took them to the Ha Giang General Hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to severe injuries, teacher Mai Thi Yen passed away at 8:00 p.m. the same day. Teacher Nguyen Dai Dinh Nam continued to receive emergency treatment at the hospital, but due to poor health, he was unable to return home to mourn his wife.

12 years ago, teacher Nguyen Dai Dinh Nam moved from his hometown in Phu Tho to the mountainous district of Yen Minh (Ha Giang), 400 km away, to take up a job. He married Ms. Mai Thi Yen from Bac Giang, and for many years together they "stayed in the village" to teach at the high mountain school of Duong Thuong primary school and kindergarten. The teacher and his wife have two children, a boy born in 2013 who lives with his grandmother in Thanh Son district (Phu Tho), and a daughter born in 2018 who lives and teaches in Ha Giang with her parents.

After the accident, Mr. Nam's daughter was sent to her grandmother's house in Thanh Son town, and the two siblings were temporarily cared for by their grandmother and relatives. The local government also regularly updated the family's situation and provided many practical support actions.

Chairman of Thanh Son District People's Committee Doan Quang Tuan, on behalf of the local government, expressed his wish to have teacher Dinh Nam work near his home to conveniently take care of his elderly mother and young children after he recovers.

Kim Dong Primary School (Thanh Son town) - where the son of the teacher who had the accident is studying - also launched a fundraising campaign, which was enthusiastically responded by teachers and parents, contributing more than 47 million VND to the families of the two children.

In a letter of condolence and visit to the family of teacher Mai Thi Yen, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son wrote: " The leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training would like to express their condolences for her passing and send their deepest condolences to her family and colleagues. We hope that her family and colleagues will soon overcome this pain, stabilize their lives and work, and continue to fulfill her unfinished wishes. The Ministry of Education and Training would like to respectfully acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of her, her family and colleagues to the cause of education ."
