" We have received a response from the leaders of the Vietnam Football Federation. Hoang Anh Gia Lai Football Club is urgently researching and completing the requirements to be able to change its name. We may have a document requesting to change the name as an exception ," a leader of HAGL Club told VTC News .
On November 6, HAGL sent a document requesting VFF to change the team name to LPBank HAGL. This is part of the cooperation agreement between the mountain town team and Lien Viet Bank - the new sponsor.
In fact, HAGL announced the name change a few weeks ago during the announcement of comprehensive cooperation with the sponsor. On the homepage, they also started using the name "LPBank HAGL".
HAGL Club still wants to change its name.
However, on the afternoon of November 10, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) responded in writing and rejected HAGL Club's request to change its name. Based on Article 8 of the Professional Football Regulations, VFF determined that HAGL's request to change its name was not appropriate.
Specifically, HAGL Club does not meet item a, clause 1, article 8 when the new name of the team is not a proper name or a business name associated with a local name. In this case, LPBank and Hoang Anh Gia Lai are 2 business names.
According to Article 8, Clause 2, the name of the Club “must not include the name and/or logo of a third party, whether the party is a commercial partner or sponsor of the Club”. In the case of HAGL, the third party is LPBank.
In addition, the request to change the name was sent to VFF “while the season is in progress”. Clause 4, Article 8 of the Professional Football Regulations does not allow this. Up to now, the 2023/2024 V.League season has been held for 3 rounds.
HAGL's choice to complete the criteria for the name and request an exception is in accordance with the Regulations of Vietnam Professional Football. Teams are allowed to request an exception to change their name and the decision is up to the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Football Federation. If approved, HAGL can still change its name as desired.
