A 19-year-old Tanjong Pagar United player was arrested after assaulting two Albirex Niigata players at the end of a Singapore Premier League (SPL) U21 match at Jurong East Stadium on February 10.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that at around 9:40pm on February 10, they received a call for assistance at 21 Jurong East Street 31. "A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital in a conscious state. A 19-year-old man was later arrested for causing public nuisance and is also being investigated for attempted assault," the police said.

In videos recorded by spectators and posted online, Tanjong Pagar midfielder Aniq Rizqin, 19, punched Albirex defender Sim Jun Yen, 17, during the post-match handshake. Albirex defender Kenji Austin, 20, intervened by pushing Aniq away, but seconds later, Aniq rushed in and delivered a powerful punch to Austin's face, leaving him motionless on the pitch before his teammates could pull Aniq away.

Austin has no recollection of the incident, but medical tests showed he had no broken bones or brain injuries. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for help at Jurong East Stadium at around 10pm on 10 February, and one person was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) confirmed that the player was discharged from hospital on February 11. A spokesman for Albirex Club said the club would hand over the entire case to the FAS for resolution.

In the match, a Tanjong Pagar player received a red card. However, the match ended 3-2 in favor of Tanjong Pagar and there was no sign of tension until the players shook hands after the match.

In a statement on Facebook, Tanjong Pagar FC apologised to Albirex, their players and their fans. The club stressed: " The behaviour of our players does not reflect the values and standards of the club. We do not tolerate violence and unsportsmanlike behaviour."

A Tanjong Pagar spokesman said the club may consider terminating Aniq’s contract. In addition to playing for the Under-21s, the 19-year-old made his Singapore Premier League debut in September 2024 in a 6-0 defeat to Lion City Sailors and has made three appearances in the top flight.

A Tanjong Pagar spokesman added: "This behaviour is completely unacceptable and goes against the core values of sportsmanship and fair play that the club upholds. We believe immediate action is required. We will meet and make a decision after receiving full information from the police."

Tanjong Pagar also said they would take stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, club officials are also expected to visit Austin, subject to the player's family's approval.
