A cheaper YouTube Premium service has been tested by Google for a while now.
According to Bloomberg, the new service package will be announced in the near future and will only be available in four countries: the US, Australia, Germany and Thailand. The main goal of Premium Lite is to serve users who prefer to watch shows rather than music videos. This service package will give members access to a "huge library of podcasts and tutorials without ads". However, those who want to watch music videos without ads will still have to subscribe to the Premium package, which is currently priced at VND79,000/month for individual users in Vietnam.
What benefits do YouTube Premium Lite users get?
The price of the YouTube Premium Lite package has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be much lower than the Premium package because it does not include YouTube Music Premium, which is currently priced at VND 65,000 for individual users.
"We're committed to giving users more choice and flexibility. We've been testing the new YouTube Premium service with mostly ad-free videos in a few markets and hope to expand the service in the future," a YouTube spokesperson said.
YouTube has been testing a cheaper version of its Premium plan for months, but not in the US. It's unclear what other benefits Premium Lite members will get, beyond watching tutorials and podcasts. It's possible that users will still be able to download content for offline viewing, and the option to play videos in the background will be among the perks of the service.
