Low prices, durian exports decrease, concerns about durian consumption before the main season

Although durian has been exported to China again, the quantity is much smaller than before, causing the market to stagnate. If this situation continues, the price of durian in the main season in the next few months may drop even lower because the domestic market does not consume much durian.

Durian prices fall, exports also fall

Although it is the off-season, the current price of durian is considered quite low. Specifically, Ri6 durian is currently purchased at a price of 45,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, depending on the ratio and quality of the fruit of each garden. Compared to the same period last year, this price has decreased by 50,000 VND/kg.

Durian prices today (February 19) continue to remain low nationwide for both Thai and Ri6 durian.

Specifically, Ri6 durian bought in bulk is being purchased for around 42,000 - 45,000 VND/kg while the nice type is priced at around 62,000 - 65,000 VND/kg.

For Thai durian, the price is recorded at 57,000 - 67,000 VND/kg and 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg for beautiful Thai durian.

Not only are prices falling, durian exports are also decreasing. According to customs authorities at border gates, the output of durian exported through Tan Thanh border gate and Huu Nghi international border gate (Lang Son) has decreased sharply compared to the same period last year, due to China tightening quality control on fresh durian.

At Tan Thanh border gate - where a large amount of fresh durian is regularly exported, from the beginning of 2025 until now, only 6 enterprises have opened 17 sets of declarations (corresponding to 17 trucks) to export durian through here; with a turnover of more than 1.2 million USD.

According to information from the Huu Nghi International Border Gate Customs Branch, from the beginning of February 2025 to now, 25 trucks carrying durian have been exported to China through this border gate. However, this number is only 5-10% compared to the same period in 2024.

Although durian has been exported to China again, the quantity is very small, causing the market to stagnate. If this situation continues, the price of durian in the main season may drop even lower in the next few months because the domestic market does not consume much durian.

From March to May is the main harvest season for durian in the West. April to July is the main harvest season in the Eastern provinces such as Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, etc. May to July is the main durian harvest season in Tay Ninh and Binh Phuoc... This will increase the pressure on durian consumption, requiring smooth export.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) said that from now on, businesses need to have solutions for post-harvest preservation and anti-fungal treatment like Thailand to confidently export durian during the main season, otherwise it will affect the growth of the fruit and vegetable industry. At the same time, it is necessary to control the quality of durian from the root according to new regulations.

In fact, despite the low prices, the average yield of off-season durian this year is still around 20 tons/ha. After deducting costs, farmers still make a profit of 800 - 900 million VND/ha. However, if prices continue to fall during the main season, growers may not make a profit.

According to experts, the reason for the decrease in durian prices is partly due to the tightening of quality control by importing countries. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that China's requirement that durian export shipments must have a yellow O quality inspection certificate is a requirement of the import market and we must comply.

Yellow O is a dye used in industries such as dyeing leather, paper, and wood. From January 10, China announced that it would apply regulations requiring shipments of Thai and Vietnamese durian to have additional certificates of inspection for yellow O. Laboratories testing for yellow O must be approved by China.

According to the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, during the export process, most of the gardeners, packaging facilities, and shipments of Vietnamese durian are confirmed to be very good and of high quality. However, there are also facilities, businesses, growing areas, and packaging facilities that have not strictly complied. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has and will regularly and continuously direct when there are problems with shipments to rectify.

Currently, Vietnam's durian growing area is about 169,000 hectares, with a relatively high yield of durian. Last year alone, durian exports reached 3.2 billion USD, accounting for nearly half of the country's fruit and vegetable export value.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) recognizes that the current problem of the durian industry is worrying, not just about the low price. Our durian must ensure quality, strictly comply with market regulations, change farming methods, specifically not overuse imported fertilizers of unknown origin with high cadmium, or focus on changing post-harvest preservation technology for packaging facilities. Only then will the export pace of durian return to normal. The authorities also need to promptly step in to guide, inspect and control the quality of durian, creating favorable conditions for businesses to clear goods...

Although the current difficulties with durian are quite large, in the medium term, the export of fruits and vegetables, including durian from Vietnam, will continue to be supported by the effectiveness of the Protocols and the demand from markets such as the US, EU, China, and India still has a lot of room.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit), in 2025, the fruit and vegetable industry aims to set a new record for exports, increasing by 15% compared to 2024 to about 8 billion USD . In particular, durian continues to play a key role and still has room for growth in 2025.

It is forecasted that durian export turnover may increase to 3.6-3.8 billion USD by 2025. This is also a figure 13-15% higher than in 2024. At the same time, Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export turnover may increase by nearly 15%, to more than 8 billion USD .
