World coffee prices turned "green" across all exchanges, robusta trading alone increased sharply, as the New York market has not returned to trading since the day Mr. Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States for the second time.

Domestic coffee prices today, January 21, are trading in the range of 120,300 - 121,000 VND/kg. The harvest is gradually coming to an end with the excitement of coffee growers. In some high-yield areas, coffee prices have also increased, not only helping to increase income and improve living standards but also creating conditions for reinvestment in production and maintaining stable coffee growing areas after a long period of reduced coffee growing areas due to unstable prices.

The dollar fell sharply after President Trump's inauguration, helping London stocks soar. The dollar fell after news that President Donald Trump's new administration would not immediately impose trade tariffs, causing the currencies of some of the country's trading partners to appreciate.

The increase in robusta coffee prices is putting more pressure on arabica coffee, the market is also worried about shortages, as supply from Vietnam will be interrupted during the upcoming Lunar New Year and the overbought position is decreasing on both exchanges.

Coffee exports from top producer Brazil could slow this year, traders say, as it is a lean year in the country’s biennial cycle, while last year’s dry weather could reduce the 2025-2026 crop. The Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) estimates that Brazil’s coffee exports are unlikely to hit a record in 2025, after reaching a historic high in 2024, due to forecasts of lower arabica production.

According to the latest forecast from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), global coffee production is expected to recover in the 2024-2025 crop year, mainly due to increased output in Vietnam and Indonesia. Meanwhile, with consumption rising, global coffee inventories at the end of 2024 will decline further, to 20.9 million bags.

Global coffee exports in 2025 are expected to increase only modestly as increased shipments from Vietnam and Indonesia offset an expected decline in exports from Brazil. Specifically, Vietnam’s coffee exports are expected to increase by 1.8 million bags in 2025 to 24.4 million bags due to improved supplies. Meanwhile, global coffee consumption in 2025 is expected to increase by 5.1 million bags to 168.1 million bags. The majority of the increase will come from the European Union (EU), the United States and China.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in December 2024, the average export price of Vietnamese coffee is estimated at 5,450 USD/ton, down slightly by 2.3% compared to November 2024, but up sharply by 88.8% compared to December 2023. In the whole year of 2024, the average export price of coffee is estimated at 4,158 USD/ton, up 59.1% compared to 2023.

In 2024, world coffee prices will continue to set new records, mainly due to concerns about supply shortages from major exporting countries such as Vietnam and Brazil due to unfavorable weather. Along with that, the increase in buying by hedge funds and the increase in tensions in the Red Sea, which have increased shipping costs, are also factors that have caused coffee prices to increase sharply. In addition, coffee prices are also supported by countries increasing their stockpiles due to concerns that Europe will implement the EUDR after December 30, 2024.

However, 2024 is also a special year for the coffee industry and for the first time, Vietnamese coffee prices are the highest in the world. Robusta coffee export prices are higher than Arabica coffee prices, which has never happened before.

It is forecasted that in 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports will continue to grow as supply increases and consumer demand from countries around the world increases.
