Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has just announced an increase in the average retail electricity price to 1,920.4 VND/kWh in the context that the electricity production and business price in 2022 exceeds 2,000 VND/kWh.

On May 4, according to the plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, EVN announced an increase in electricity prices by 3%. Accordingly, each kWh of electricity will increase by nearly 56 VND, to an average of 1,920.3732 VND. The effective date is May 4.
After the new average retail electricity price is available, EVN will calculate the corresponding adjusted retail electricity price. Previously, the most recent electricity price increase was in March 2019 and the average retail electricity price remained at VND1,864.44/kWh, applied from that time until now.
Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also announced the electricity production and business costs of EVN in 2021 and 2022. Specifically, the total electricity production and business costs in 2021 are VND 419,032 billion ; in 2022, it is VND 493,265 billion (including electricity production and business costs of power generation, power transmission, electricity distribution - retail and auxiliary - industry management).
Accordingly, the cost of electricity production and business in 2021 is 1,859.9 VND/kWh, an increase of 1.84% compared to 2020; the cost of electricity production and business in 2022 is 2,032.26 VND/kWh, an increase of 9.27% compared to 2021.
Thus, the cost of electricity production has officially exceeded 2,000 VND/kWh, 167.82 VND higher than the current average retail electricity price (1,864.44 VND/kWh).

In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade also announced that the revenue from selling commercial electricity in 2022 was VND 456,971.15 billion , an increase of 9.31% compared to 2021. The average selling price of commercial electricity in 2022 was VND 1,882.73/kWh, an increase of 1.46% compared to 2021.
EVN's 2022 electricity production and business results were a loss of VND 36,294 billion . Revenue from activities related to electricity production and business in 2022 was VND 10,058 billion . EVN's total 2022 electricity production and business activities and activities related to electricity production and business in 2022 were a loss of VND 26,235 billion (excluding income from other production).
In February, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai signed a decision on the price framework for the new average retail electricity price in the range of VND1,826.22-2,444.09/kWh. The promulgation of the new average retail electricity price framework is the basis for the Ministry of Industry and Trade to decide on the specific increase in the average retail electricity price this year.
Previously, EVN proposed to increase electricity prices in the context that this enterprise estimated to lose more than 30,000 billion VND in 2022 due to high fuel prices. In 2023, if the retail electricity price remains the same as the current electricity price, the expected loss will be up to 64,941 billion VND ; of which the first 6 months of the year will lose 44,099 billion VND and the last 6 months of the year will lose 20,842 billion VND .
