Speaking at a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) summit in New Delhi, India, on September 10, European Council (EC) President Charles Michel stressed that a prosperous China is good for the European Union (EU) and the world and that the organization has no intention of hindering Beijing's development. The EU also continues to adhere to the one-China principle.
For his part, Chinese Premier Li Qiang affirmed that there is no geopolitical conflict between China and the EU, let alone a fundamental conflict of interests.
He affirmed that Beijing is willing to cooperate with Europe to promote the stable and healthy development of bilateral relations. The Chinese official also said that the country's development is an opportunity, not a risk for the EU. Whether now or in the future, Beijing is and will be a friend and reliable partner of Europe.
On the same day, meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang said that the two countries should properly resolve disagreements and respect each other's core interests and main concerns.
He also called on London and Beijing to jointly oppose linking trade and economic cooperation with politics and security, promote the building of an open world economy, and maintain the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) as its core. According to him, both support, implement, and benefit from free trade.
For his part, the British Prime Minister's spokesman said that Mr. Rishi Sunak raised "significant concerns about China's interference in Britain's parliamentary democracy" on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi, India.
Earlier, on September 9, the British police said they had arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of spying. According to the Sunday Times (UK), this person is a researcher in Parliament and has connections with the ruling Conservative Party MPs, including the Minister of State in charge of security at the Ministry of the Interior Tom Tugendhat and Alicia Kearns, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons.
