(Dan Tri) - A rock block weighing more than 400 tons blocking National Highway 27C, passing through Khanh Le Pass (Khanh Hoa Province) due to a landslide, was successfully destroyed by authorities using dynamite.

On the evening of December 16, Mr. Chu Van An, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Transport of Khanh Hoa province, said that at 7:00 p.m. the same day, the authorities successfully detonated a block of rock weighing more than 400 tons, blocking National Highway 27C, using an electric detonator.

Workers, vehicles and machinery were evacuated 1km away from the rock, but the loud explosion could still be heard.

At the scene, the rock was broken into many large pieces.

Earlier that afternoon, construction units drilled dozens of deep holes in the rock to stuff 18kg of explosives inside.

Initially, by naked eye, the rock was estimated to weigh more than 100 tons. However, after using modern measuring equipment, professional forces determined that this rock weighed more than 400 tons.

A huge rock rolled down the mountain, blocking the road in a landslide that occurred in the early morning of December 15. Authorities used machinery for hours to remove it but were unsuccessful, so they decided to use mines to destroy it.

As reported, due to prolonged heavy rain, in the early morning of December 15, National Highway 27C Khanh Le Pass section experienced serious landslides at many points. Thousands of cubic meters of soil and rocks spilled onto the road, paralyzing traffic on the Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa) - Da Lat (Lam Dong) route.

The landslide also trapped more than 50 passenger cars, trucks, and cars and nearly 350 people between the landslide sites.

On the evening of December 15, authorities from Khanh Hoa and Lam Dong provinces used machinery and equipment to rescue the trapped people and bring them to safety.

So far, forces from the two provinces have cleared 4/6 landslide sites. Construction teams are continuing to clear the remaining 2 landslide sites with relatively large volumes of rock and soil.
