When Tet comes, spring comes, every family meticulously chooses local specialties to display on the fruit tray, prepare dishes and give as gifts. In addition to custard apple, coconut, papaya, dragon fruit, etc., gardeners in Ham Cuong (Ham Thuan Nam) will provide a quantity of melons to serve the market.
Although “behind” the melon gardens in Thuan Quy (Ham Thuan Nam), melons grown in substrates in Ham Cuong commune are gradually affirming their brand, thanks to their high quality, productivity and economic efficiency. When it comes to harvest, companies in Ho Chi Minh City purchase the products and send them straight to supermarkets. At Thanh Tung farm (Phu Sung village), this year's Tet will provide 3 tons of Huynh Long melons to serve local people.
Ms. Bui Kim Thuy - the farm owner shared: The melon varieties at the farm are honeydew melons, Huynh Long melons, grown in substrates, covered with a greenhouse, thereby better controlling weather indicators, preventing insect intrusion, ensuring sweetness, even and beautiful fruit. Each fruit weighs an average of 2 - 2.5 kg. Currently, the selling price at the garden is 70,000 VND/kg. Although the farm has not yet harvested, the number of orders has been nearly half. It is expected that by the 25th of Tet, the farm will deliver all the products to customers.
"Taking root" since 2021, but it took 1 year for Thanh Tung farm's melon products to find a foothold, that journey was extremely arduous. Because as shared by Ms. Thuy: If the same area, growing dragon fruit only requires about 100 million VND/1,000 m2, but melons cost 5 times that amount. This is probably also the main reason why farmers in the area are hesitant to invest. Not to mention that there must be a stable consumption market, growers know how to apply scientific and technological advances in production to have a melon crop with the required yield and quality. With the knowledge of an environmental engineer and the courage of a young person, Bui Kim Thuy is not discouraged. From the initial 1,000 m2, the farm has now expanded to 4,000 m2.
Her model of growing melons in greenhouses using drip irrigation technology has opened up a new direction in local agricultural production. If you are persistent and hardworking, the products will have stable output. This is also an opportunity for farmers to learn from experience, access advanced science and technology to create clean products that are safe for consumers' health, bringing high income to producers, especially during the Lunar New Year.
