2 craft villages join the global network

In the last months of 2024, a delegation of the World Craft Council led by Mr. Aziz Murtazaev - Chairman of the World Craft Council Asia-Pacific region, visited and worked with Hanoi City.

The delegation members met with artisans and skilled workers from Bat Trang pottery village and Van Phuc silk village. Through work and practical experience, the Council highly appreciated the unique values ​​of the two craft villages, from culture, history to economy and social impact.

Through the meetings, the delegation members had a panoramic view of Bat Trang pottery village and Van Phuc silk village. “We were really impressed with the history, tradition and values ​​of the craft villages, and saw the dedication of the artisans to preserving and developing Hanoi’s craft villages…” - Mr. Aziz shared.

The Council assessed that Bat Trang pottery village and Van Phuc silk village not only fully meet the criteria of a traditional craft village but also deserve to become members of the global network of creative craft cities.

Based on specific criteria, at the end of 2024, Bat Trang pottery village and Van Phuc silk village were recognized by the World Craft Council as members of the World Creative Craft Cities Network. These are also the first two traditional craft villages in Vietnam to receive this honor.

Towards development and integration

According to the Head of the Hanoi Rural Development Department Nguyen Van Chi, it is expected that on the evening of February 14, 2025, at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Hanoi, the ceremony to receive the title of Bat Trang pottery and Van Phuc silk villages as members of the World Network of Creative Craft Cities will take place.

On this occasion, the city will organize an “Event to display, demonstrate and create handicraft products by domestic and international artisans”. The activity aims to promote cultural exchange, promote the image of the capital to domestic and international friends, towards preserving and developing traditional craft villages.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai assessed that the capital's traditional craft villages joining the World Network of Creative Craft Cities brings many important values ​​and benefits, helping Hanoi affirm its position on the world cultural map.

“This is also an opportunity for craft villages to improve their competitiveness, preserve traditional values, expand markets, promote international cultural exchanges, and promote sustainable development…” - Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dai emphasized.

A representative of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development added that in 2025, the city strives for the World Craft Council to consider and recognize at least 2 craft villages to join the World Creative Craft Cities Network; invite craft villages in the Network to attend the International Craft Village Conservation and Development Festival in 2025; and organize the annual conference of the World Craft Council in Hanoi.

Through a series of activities, Hanoi aims to expand international cooperation, seek new opportunities and new fortunes for the capital's handicraft industry, thereby contributing to conservation, development and deep integration with the international community.
