Practical action
Faced with the current limited infrastructure of the two community tourism villages Bhohoong (Song Kon commune) and Dhroong (Ta Lu commune), Dong Giang district has allocated resources to invest in renovating degraded items and building new items.
In fact, the walking path to the Dhroong community-based ethnic minority village has been upgraded; the reception, exhibition and brocade weaving production house along National Highway 14G is nearing its final stage of completion. In the Bhohoong community-based ethnic minority village, the district is renovating and planting flowers along the walking path, planting grass on the football field near the cultural house, and decorating the suspension bridge leading to the village to create an impressive highlight for visitors. These projects will be completed and inaugurated in time for the new rice celebration.
According to Mr. A Vo To Phuong - Chairman of Dong Giang District People's Committee, local Party committees and authorities have issued many policies to concretize the preservation and promotion of Co Tu cultural identity in accordance with the mountainous area and local situation.
In particular, the district thoroughly adheres to the consistent viewpoint of preserving and promoting three national intangible cultural heritages recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, including “Tan tung da da dance”, “Brocade weaving”, and “Talking and singing”. Promoting traditional cultures such as cuisine, brocade weaving, bamboo and rattan weaving, sculpture, mirror making, etc.
Conservation must be associated with tourism development, considering this a key task to exploit the potential of natural landscapes and unique indigenous cultures to create sustainable livelihoods, improve income, and enhance people's lives.
In recent years, the mountainous district of Dong Giang has mobilized village elders, prestigious people, and Co Tu folk artists to establish clubs for singing and speaking songs; and open classes for teaching speaking and singing songs for young people and students.
Schools also organize courses to teach the art of drumming, gong playing combined with tan tung da da dance, ly speaking - ly singing, love songs, brocade weaving, buffalo horn cake wrapping competitions, crossbow shooting, and traditional costume performances. On the occasion of holidays or events, traditional art performances and displays of products and typical labor tools of the Co Tu people are integrated.
Vice Chairman of Dong Giang District People's Committee - Mr. Do Huu Tung said that this year alone, the district successfully organized 3 training courses on teaching the art of speaking and singing Ly in 3 communes of Ma Cooih, A Rooi and Song Kon.
Each class consists of 65 students, who are taught knowledge, practical skills, and performance skills by experienced Co Tu artisans. The students all expressed their interest, impression, and suggested that more classes should be opened and the training time should be extended.
Promoting indigenous quintessence
On October 23, 2023, Dong Giang District Party Committee issued Resolution No. 35 on continuing to lead the work of preserving and promoting traditional cultural values of the Co Tu ethnic group associated with tourism development in the district for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
On October 25, 2023, the District People's Council issued Resolution No. 28 approving the "Project to preserve and promote traditional cultural values of the Co Tu ethnic group associated with tourism development in the district for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030".
“This is a very important premise for the District People's Committee to continue to develop plans and implement tasks. The district will integrate support resources from the Central Government and the province from national target programs; seek additional support from projects of the International Development and Relief Organization (FIDR) to develop traditional crafts. Promote investment calling, create favorable conditions for businesses to invest in eco-tourism" - Mr. A Vo To Phuong said.
To implement the project, Mr. Do Huu Tung said that the district will complete the procedures to start the Dong Giang Co Tu Cultural Park project in early 2025. When completed, this park will be a place to organize activities imbued with the Co Tu cultural identity. The district People's Committee has also directed the relevant departments to collect and compile books related to the three recognized national intangible cultural heritages.
On the weekend of late December, the district will organize the "Prônggooch" twinning ceremony of the Co Tu ethnic group in Dong Giang district in 2024. This is an activity to realize Plan No. 214 dated June 21, 2024 of the District People's Committee on implementing Project 6 "Preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development".
