At first glance it looks like trash, but unexpectedly it is a super rare "treasure" with an unexpectedly expensive value.
Treasure Forgotten in a Rice Bin for 50 Years
In the home of a fisherman named Xu on the Zhou Shan Islands (China), there is a family heirloom. However, it was not until 2022 that Mr. Xu discovered this treasure in a rice barrel.
It was a giant piece of dried fish bladder, an extremely eye-catching orange-yellow color. Previously in 1972, his father spent 40 yuan, equivalent to tens of thousands of yuan now (10,000 yuan equivalent to 33.7 million VND) to buy a Mao Chang fish weighing more than 50kg. This is a giant fish breed in China, so its fish bladder is also very large, weighing up to 350g.

After being removed from the fish, the fish maw was dried and stored for future use by the Xu family. However, because the family members were all strong, the “treasure” was almost forgotten in the rice bin for many years.

About half a century later, when Mr. Xu opened the dusty old rice barrel, he discovered the “treasure” of the past. The fish bladder was in a perfectly preserved state, with a clear texture, as if time had never left a trace on it.

Mr. Xu’s family then contacted Professor Zhao of Zhejiang Ocean University. Professor Zhao said that in the current market, “antiques” like this are extremely rare.
In southern China, especially in Guangdong and Hong Kong, fish maw is considered a noble food on the dining table. The price of the top grade can reach 6-8 million yuan (20.2-27 billion VND)/kg. And the "treasure" of Mr. Xu's family can be worth as much as a house.

What’s more interesting is that aged fish maw like Mr. Xu’s has higher nutritional value and is easier for the body to absorb than regular fish maw. However, considering its rarity and perfect preservation condition, experts suggest that Mr. Xu should keep it as a family heirloom for his descendants.
