The club operates for the passion of many people
Reporter: Entering the 9th year of the Southern Cultural Research and Honor Club, as the chairman - Mr. Ho Nhut Quang, can you share how the club has developed over the past year?
- Cultural speaker Ho Nhut Quang: Although last year was a year of economic difficulties, our club still tried to maintain cultural activities. Every week, members spend time meeting to share about traditional Vietnamese culture from many different regions, compose and practice new plays, and discuss the club's operational directions.
What is the biggest difficulty in maintaining the club, sir?
- It's a financial issue. There was a time when the club temporarily stopped operating due to lack of funds. But my passion for the profession and my responsibility for the club never diminished. However, now that things are gradually improving, activities have started to restart.
I have never felt regretful because researching and honoring culture is the greatest passion in my life. When it is a passion, the more you do it, the more joy and happiness you will have. These things become the motivation for me to easily overcome all difficulties and hardships.
. Have you ever felt like maintaining the club was "too much" and wanted to stop?
- I never thought of stopping. Because the club is the passion that my teacher - the late Professor Tran Van Khe - wanted the club to be launched at the right time, even though at that time he was in the emergency room but still did not let me postpone the founding date.
Although he is no longer alive, he is always present in the activities of the Club. Our success is the gift we give to our teacher. Today, the members who have been with the Club for the past 9 years have become more mature, more successful in both academic qualifications and clearly promoted positions. This is an honor as well as a great motivation for us to look forward with optimistic goals and visions.
For the passion of Vietnamese culture
Surely you already have a plan for the club to go long term?
- We combine the club's activities with a number of agencies and organizations that have a widespread effect and bring practical economic efficiency. In the coming time, the club will cooperate with travel agencies to bring the program "Chap cai luong" into tours to promote culture to tourists through cai luong art.
"Chap cai luong" will be performed regularly at cultural programs organized by members of the Southern Culture Research and Honor Club. Up to now, I have had more than 100 "Chap cai luong" songs praising the homeland, national heroes and expressing human morality.
In particular, the Club plans to launch a book on Vietnamese culture and customs on the occasion of the Club's 10th anniversary in the near future. Some of the content has been shared with audiences in cultural programs on radio and television.
There were times when the club fell into difficulty.
Are there any changes and innovations to make the club's plays more attractive to audiences?
- The main innovation is that the "cai luong" performances will have on-site interaction with the audience, not just performances. This will create excitement for the audience. We will also have plays that are current events, not just old plays. Along with that is the application of the AIDA method (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) to measure, evaluate and always improve to achieve better results.
In the past, theater troupes all had their own "trump cards" to attract and differentiate themselves in the eyes of the audience. Does the club have that "difference"?
- Each member of the Club is a trump card. We believe in the professionalism of each member. Like Tu Quyen, the female lead of "Thien Ly Theater" is also the female lead of the Club, artist Xuan Lan used to be an actress in the "Thanh Minh - Thanh Nga" troupe, Ms. Ly Kieu Hanh is also a Cai Luong artist who was trained in professional schools in the past for singing and acting and has always accompanied us. There are also Meritorious Artist Hai Phuong playing the zither, musician Chau Minh Tam playing the concave guitar, who are the main musicians of the Club.
But we have to get through this together.
Do you think cải lương will reach young audiences?
- That is our goal. Specifically, the programs organized at schools through the form of dramatization also contribute to helping children access cải lương, understand cải lương and love the traditional cultural art of our country more, so that cải lương does not fade away or is only for older audiences.
I consider myself a companion of young people, ready to accept and share with my understanding. Perhaps that is why many young people are deeply interested, texting and sending letters to the Club to ask about and wish to become a member of the Club.
