Quang Tri province has a 75 km long coastline with a fishing ground of more than 9,000 km2, abundant seafood reserves and high economic value. The coastal area has conditions for developing seaports, industrial facilities for building and repairing ships, raising and processing aquatic and seafood products. Along the coast, there are many beautiful beaches such as Cua Tung, Gio Hai, Cua Viet, My Thuy and Con Co island, which have become attractive sea and island tourist destinations. In particular, the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone has been formed to exploit the potential and strengths of the sea area.

In the Quang Tri Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, recently approved by the Government, the coastal area is identified as the focus for urban development; integrated tourism-service areas connected to Con Co Island and modern, environmentally friendly aquaculture and seafood processing complexes. Developing clean industrial complexes combined with services, urban areas and residential areas.
Maintain, restore and expand coastal protection forests, restore the environment of ecological forests in sandy areas. Develop the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone into a comprehensive marine economic zone, focusing on energy industry, multi-industry industry exploiting coastal advantages, and logistics.
For development corridors, the focus is on gas industrial zones, multi-industry zones exploiting the advantages of seaports, logistics services; marine eco-tourism urban areas and coastal sand ecological areas associated with ecosystem restoration.
Regarding tourism, the plan aims to promote advantages in terms of sea, islands, ecology, culture, beliefs... and inter-regional connectivity in the Central heritage tourism system, along with national and international economic corridors; develop sea and island resort tourism, focusing on developing the Cua Tung - Cua Viet - Con Co island tourism triangle and the coastal urban tourism strip; promote the development of ecological and community tourism in coastal areas.
To promote sustainable development of the marine economy, Quang Tri province has supplemented the planning of coastal urban areas; proactively reviewed and supplemented the planning and policies on the marine economy towards linkage and sustainable development. Synchronously develop strategies and plans related to the sea and islands towards integrated management, suitable for the marine ecosystem, ensuring harmonious and synchronous connection between conservation and development of mainland, coastal, sea and island areas of the province and neighboring provinces.
Concentrate resources to develop the province's coastal industry into a dynamic development area, as a driving force for the province's economic growth, in which the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone is the core, developing multi-industry industry. Invest in the seaport system and develop maritime transport services. Increase investment attraction to build My Thuy deep-water port, upgrade Cua Viet port to exploit the advantages of port services, maritime transport and related services. Reasonable development of shipbuilding and repair industries and supporting industries...
Quang Tri province currently has 2,286 motorized vessels with a total capacity of over 140,000 CV, including 192 offshore vessels; the catch in 2023 will reach 27,640 tons. The coastal fisheries industry has shifted strongly from traditional aquaculture and seafood exploitation to industrial, high-tech applications.
Reorganize seafood exploitation activities in the direction of reducing nearshore exploitation, promoting exploitation in offshore areas suitable to each sea area and the resilience of the marine ecosystem, along with synchronous and effective implementation of training and job conversion for fishermen.
Implement policies to remove difficulties and support fishermen to invest in building new high-capacity boats for offshore fishing. Invest in upgrading fishing ports, fishing wharves, boat anchorage areas and organize fishing logistics services well. Promote the application of advanced science and technology in aquaculture, exploitation, preservation and processing of seafood, creating key products with high quality and economic value, meeting the needs of domestic and foreign markets.
In addition, the province has focused on developing tourism, sea and island services to become one of the key economic sectors of the marine economy. Focusing resources on investing in the development of synchronous, focused and key tourism infrastructure; encouraging and creating conditions for economic sectors to participate in the development of eco-tourism, exploration, high-class coastal resorts in Cua Viet, Cua Tung and Con Co islands; building, developing, diversifying local marine tourism products, product chains, and brands on the basis of preserving biodiversity, promoting unique cultural and historical values of regions, connecting with tourist routes on the East-West Economic Corridor to make Quang Tri an attractive destination at home and abroad.
Not only possessing great potential for developing services, tourism, and trade, Quang Tri sea has great potential for offshore wind power and Ken Bau and Bao Vang gas fields less than 120 km from the coast of Quang Tri, which are the basis for developing the gas industry in the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone, an important premise and great advantage for developing the local marine economy.
In addition to the two key areas of Cua Viet and Cua Tung, coastal economic zones are also being formed in the communes of Trieu An, Trieu Van (Trieu Phong district) and Hai An, Hai Duong (Hai Lang district). In particular, Quang Tri is focusing on building the My Thuy deep-water port and the Hai Lang LNG Power Center.
If My Thuy deep-water port and Hai Lang LNG Power Center are formed, they will be the economic pillars for the coastal urban area stretching from Trieu Phong to Hai Lang, creating the premise for the formation of a multi-sector, multi-industry marine economic corridor such as: resort tourism, seafood exploitation and processing, electricity industry, logistics services and seaports.
In addition, the coastal area of Quang Tri province also has many advantages for exploiting cargo transport ports such as: Cua Viet port, Cua Tung fishing port, fishing port combined with storm shelter area Nam Cua Viet, fishing port combined with storm shelter area Bac Cua Viet, storm shelter area Con Co island.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province Vo Van Hung said that in the planning of the coastal area of the province for the period of 2021-2030 and vision to 2050, the central area is determined to be the two districts of Gio Linh and Trieu Phong, with the core being Cua Viet urban area. The southern area of Hai Lang district has the core being the two communes of Hai An and Hai Duong in the Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone.
Accordingly, the province focuses on mobilizing and building infrastructure for coastal economic zones; prioritizing the development of urban centers, especially in Cua Viet and Cua Tung towns and the coastal route connecting the East-West Economic Corridor to become an important coastal traffic chain. Focusing on developing types of tourism, resort and marine entertainment services to meet the needs of domestic and international tourists.
In particular, Quang Tri province focuses on effectively implementing Action Program No. 144-CTHĐ/TU, dated April 24, 2019 of the Provincial Party Committee, term XVI, implementing Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW, dated October 22, 2018 of the Party Central Committee, term XII, on "Strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, vision to 2045" with the determination to become a strong and prosperous locality in terms of sea, maintaining national defense, security and sovereignty.
