DNVN - The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has just decided to extend the inspection of each batch of durian imported from Vietnam until April 30, 2025.
The decision to extend the inspection of each batch of durian imported from Vietnam until April 30, 2025 was announced by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA, China) to import-export business associations to ensure food safety and hygiene.
Previously, TFDA applied a requirement to inspect 100% of fresh durian shipments from Vietnam from August 12, 2024 to February 11, 2025, because in the last 6 months, 4 batches were found to be substandard.
Statistics show that in 2024, there were a total of 8 shipments of Vietnamese durian that did not meet Taiwan's (China) food safety regulations.
Vietnamese durian has a firm foothold in Taiwan thanks to its quality and reasonable price.
After Typhoon Gaemi, the demand for green vegetables in Taiwan increased dramatically, causing imports from Vietnam to increase to stabilize prices. In this situation, TFDA called on Vietnam to coordinate more closely in guiding businesses to meet food safety standards.
According to the provisions of the Taiwan Food Safety Administration Act, importing enterprises must self-manage and maintain quality monitoring records. If a product is found to pose a safety risk, the enterprise must proactively stop selling, recall the product, and report to the authorities.
TFDA said that if by April 30, 2025, durian shipments imported from Vietnam still do not meet the requirements, the batch-by-batch inspection measure may continue to be extended.
Despite strict inspection, Vietnamese durian still has a firm foothold in Taiwan thanks to its reasonable price and improved quality. The Taiwan Fruit Importers Association said that this is still one of the most popular fruits among Taiwanese people, because the domestic market cannot produce it.
Maintaining market share in Taiwan will depend on efforts to strengthen quality management from Vietnamese enterprises, as well as cooperation between authorities on both sides in the coming time.
