Department of Physical Education and Sports has new leader

Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet (right) was appointed Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training.

On April 4, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a decision appointing Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet as Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training. Previously, Mr. Hoang Viet was the Chief of Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

In addition, Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet has held the positions of Director of the Institute of Sports Science and Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training (now the Department of Sports and Physical Training).

The decision to appoint the new Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training was announced at the Conference to implement the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the Ministry on personnel work.

Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet's predecessor, former Director Dang Ha Viet, was transferred to become Director of the Department of Science, Technology, Training and Environment.

The important tournament for Vietnamese sports in the remaining months of 2025 is the 33rd SEA Games taking place in Thailand in November and December. Previously, in two consecutive SEA Games (2022 and 2023), the Vietnamese sports delegation topped the medal tally.

However, in the continental and world arenas, the recent achievements of the Vietnamese delegation have not been good. At the 19th ASIAD (Hangzhou, China) in 2023, the Vietnamese sports delegation won 3 gold medals, ranking 21st overall (2 gold medals less and 5 places lower than the previous term).

In 2024, Vietnam had no athletes win medals at the Paris Olympics. This is the second consecutive Olympics in which Vietnamese sports have come up empty-handed.
