Nearly all executives — 96% — feel a sense of urgency about integrating AI into their businesses, according to a March 2024 Slack Workforce Lab survey of more than 10,000 professionals.

But if you’re skeptical about this new technology, you’re not alone. Researchers seem to disagree on whether and how workers will use AI.

Gen Z can use AI to accelerate their careers

More and more leaders are demanding AI skills from new candidates. Young people with AI knowledge will have greater job opportunities than more experienced people without these skills, accelerating their career progression.

Gen Z employees, who grew up in the digital age, are more likely to use these tools at work than their millennial, gen X and baby boomer counterparts, according to research from Microsoft and LinkedIn.

Furthermore, 77% of leaders say young talent with AI skills will be given more responsibility at work.

Aneesh Raman, vice president and workforce expert at LinkedIn, says AI can also help young professionals advance their careers by quickly providing relevant career advice, market research and other data-driven insights, making them feel more confident and competent in their jobs.

Lydia Logan, IBM's vice president of global education and workforce development, expects the rapid integration of AI into the workplace to spark significant changes to the job responsibilities of new workers.

“When I think about my first job, a lot of what I did was answer the phone, file paperwork. And that’s still true for a lot of people. A lot of that administrative work can now be automated with AI, making it possible for someone new to the job to take on the responsibilities of someone one or two rungs above them on the career ladder,” says Lydia.

AI skills can compete with work experience

Some reports suggest that professionals are excited and experimenting with AI, while others say that most adults have not tried using AI tools at work, or do not trust them.

Regardless of your views on AI, people who don't learn how to use the technology risk losing career opportunities to those who do, according to new research from Microsoft and LinkedIn.

AI skills can compete with work experience in hiring decisions, and not just in the tech sector.

Nearly 70% of leaders said they would not hire someone without AI skills. They would rather hire someone with less experience but AI skills than someone with experience but no AI skills, according to a survey of more than 30,000 people in 31 countries.

“Learning fundamental AI skills like prompt engineering, machine learning or data literacy is the best guaranteed way to increase your competitiveness against those who may have more experience,” says Raman.

Several companies, including Google and Amazon, have announced investments in AI skills training for their workforces, but such initiatives are not widespread. Only 25% of companies plan to provide training on generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, according to Microsoft and LinkedIn.

There are dozens of free online courses that people can use to learn AI skills offered by companies like IBM, Google, and Ivy League schools like Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania.

The hype around AI is far from over. It’s just getting started, according to Colette Stallbaumer, general manager of Microsoft Copilot and co-founder of Microsoft WorkLab.

Microsoft, of course, is betting big on AI. In May, the tech giant announced it would invest $3.3 billion over the next four years to build new cloud and AI infrastructure.

“Less than two years after the advent of generative AI, we are seeing the technology being integrated into work across multiple industries,” Stallbaumer said. “This is happening at a pivotal time when the pressures, volume, and pace of work from the COVID-19 pandemic are barely abating. Employees are overwhelmed and looking to AI for help.”

Generative AI tools have seen a surge in adoption in the workplace, with usage doubling in the past six months, according to a report by Microsoft and LinkedIn.

It’s not just programmers and engineers who are experimenting with these tools. Architects, project managers, and administrative assistants are among the professionals looking to upgrade their AI skills.

Non-tech industries including healthcare, finance and marketing are rapidly adopting AI technologies to optimize business operations and increase productivity, Stallbaumer added, creating high demand and new job opportunities for professionals proficient in these tools.

According to Forbes, concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) are not unfounded as it is creating new jobs and disrupting other industries, including content creation.
