The US decision to suspend the imposition of reciprocal tariffs for 90 days is considered a positive signal for the Vietnamese pepper industry. A member of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) said that after pepper prices fell by about VND10,000/kg in just one week, this information will help prices recover in the coming time.

According to this person, export contracts to the US are being resumed. During the tax deferral period, the parties will temporarily finalize prices, although Vietnamese pepper is still subject to an additional 10% tax. However, this tax rate applies to all sources of supply, so it does not affect the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in the US market.

Previously, VPSA also reassured growers and businesses not to be too pessimistic. The association recommended that pepper growers maintain stable production, not sell off, and focus on sustainable farming standards to increase product value. Currently, prices may decrease due to the impact of limited deliveries, but in the next one to two months, prices may increase again when the supply in the hands of people is dominant.

VPSA believes that from now until the end of the year, supply and demand will remain the most important factor. Whether the US imposes tariffs or not, the global market is still in short supply, which will support pepper prices to increase again in the medium and long term.

A significant advantage is that the US does not produce pepper due to unsuitable climatic conditions, so it is completely dependent on imports. Vietnam currently accounts for over 77% of the pepper market share in the US. In addition, pepper is an essential commodity in the food processing industry, from restaurants, fast food chains to canning and meat processing industries.

In addition, the global pepper supply is facing difficulties due to declining output in countries such as Indonesia and India due to climate change, disease and high input costs. Meanwhile, consumption demand tends to increase worldwide. With the advantage of being the number one pepper producing and exporting country, Vietnam owns a modern processing system and large raw material areas, helping to maintain its key role in the global supply chain.
