Opportunities for Vietnamese music in global cooperation

Việt NamViệt Nam20/11/2024

Exporting artists, importing fans - that is the mission of global collaborations of Vietnamese singers with the ambition of "bringing Vietnamese music to the world".

Recently, the collaboration between domestic and international singers has become a trend, even exploding in the Vietnamese music market. It is a journey to promote the globalization of Vietnamese music with the role of an ambassador connecting many cultures at home and abroad.

Inevitable trend

"Flexible" is the first EP in Chi Pu's career, including 3 songs "Modern Medusa", "Waste Time", "Drive Slow" in collaboration with world artists. It is not difficult to see Chi Pu's ambition to reach the international music market with her English product. Chi Pu has collaborated with Thai artists and a multinational team to complete the EP. All 3 songs in the EP were composed and produced by RYCE Entertainment - Chi Pu's management company in China.

During the process of making the EP "Flexible", Chi Pu flew to China to record and work with the team until everything was completed. The team includes prominent names such as: QSTNMRKS, producer who participated in composing for Sáng Tạo Doanh 2024, Boysplanet 2023; Daryl K, a member of Team Wang, accompanying star Jackson Wang in many big projects; Pink Slip, producer - musician with more than 1 billion streams on Spotify, also the composer of the song "The Weekend" by Korean singer BiBi; musicians Rachael Chevlin (who has collaborated with K-pop groups such as Red Velvet, Kep1er, female singer HeeJin), Jesse Bluu (who has collaborated with JungKook, Rosé)...

The crew filming the MV "Modern Medusa" is DOVES MEDIA LABS - a professional unit, having collaborated with Nike, 88Rising, Rich Brian China Tour...

Still using familiar music genres such as pop, dance, R&B, but the modern and unique music arrangement gives "Flexible" new "flavors", creating an impression not only on the domestic audience but also approaching the music trends that are "making waves" in the international market.

In particular, Chi Pu's song "Waste Time" features Gavin:D - a handsome rapper from Thailand. He has more than 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, more than 1 billion views on YouTube, owns many MVs with hundreds of millions of views and many popular hits such as: "A rocket to the moon", "Ruk dai pow"...

Previously, hooligan. (real name Le Cong Thanh, known through the program "Best Song Big Song Big Deal version") made an impression with the album "EPIC" including songs in English.

"EPIC" was "formed" by a quality music production team: music producer Thanh Chu, Sync Project - a production team that has collaborated with top K-pop artists such as Epik High, Tablo, Gary, Lee Hi, Yoonha... and combined the composition with famous artists in the indie scene such as Minh Dinh, Alterboi, Minsicko, LyHan...

Among them, bassist Kim Ki Wook has participated in the works of many K-pop artists such as BTS, Apink, Kyuhyun (Super Junior), GFriend, Chen (EXO) and is currently working as a band-leader for all performances of the "global music group" BTS.

The song "Die Alone" is a collaboration between Hoaprox (real name Nguyen Thai Hoa) with K-391 and Nick Strand - a member of the group Seeb. K-391 owns many songs familiar to Vietnamese audiences such as: "Summertime", "Ignite", "Lily" or "End of time". Meanwhile, Nick Strand is the owner of the hit "I took a pill in Ibiza" with 1.8 billion listens on Spotify.

Since 2020, Hoaprox has collaborated with two Norwegian producers, Nick Strand and Mio. They released the MV "With you" which caused an explosion in the Vietnamese EDM community. Hoaprox is also the owner of the hit "Ngau hung", attracting billions of streams on China's social network Douyin.

The "Die Alone" team also included musician Erik Smaaland - who wrote lyrics for many Alan Walker songs - and EDM producers. According to Hoaprox, more than 10 music producers, musicians, sound engineers and singers participated in the production of "Die Alone".

What opportunities for Vietnamese music?

"Who is Bong?" includes many familiar melodies by musician Trinh Cong Son with French cultural influences. This is a long-cherished project by Hong Nhung to commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the musician's death. Audiences will enjoy 20 songs by musician Trinh Cong Son arranged in the blue jazz style by singer Hong Nhung and many international artists.

Along with that, she will also release 1,000 vinyl records of "Who is Bong?", including 8 immortal songs by musician Trinh Cong Son, arranged by famous American sound expert Mark Levinson. Of which, 2 songs "Bong Bong oi" and "Nhu canh vac bay" are translated into French and performed by French singer Clara Simonovier.

Chi Pu shared: "Performing as a Vietnamese artist for foreign audiences is a great honor, but it will be an even greater honor if I can conquer them with my work. I have and will always work very hard to create achievements that I can proudly say come from a Vietnamese artist."

When collaborating with world legend Kitaro (Japan) to produce "Brilliant Horizon", singer Ha Anh Tuan said that he was happy to join hands with the legend to create quality products.

Whether or not collaborative products can bring the dream of Vietnamese music to the world is not as important as the fact that Vietnamese singers are creating quality, valuable music products that are close to the world.

Musician Duong Khac Linh affirmed: "Vietnamese artists are very talented, they are full of fresh energy, creativity and progressive spirit. In collaborations with foreign artists, Vietnamese artists are also recognized and highly appreciated for their abilities.

Cooperating with foreign partners is a good way for Vietnamese singers to find new things in the context of the domestic music market running out of ideas."

Meanwhile, singer Hong Nhung shared: "What I want to do is conquer domestic audiences. For me, being accepted by them is enough."

This is also the common thought of many singers when deciding to join hands with foreign crews.
