Before fixing the old error, APG submarine cable encountered 2 new problems

VTC NewsVTC News21/08/2023

On August 20, an Internet service provider in Vietnam announced that the APG submarine cable line had just discovered two more problems at branches S1.9 and S9, not long after discovering a problem at branch S1.7 last June. The error caused the scheduled repair completion date to be pushed back by the end of August or at the latest early September, without a detailed plan for when the repair will be completed.

The simultaneous failure of three branches of this line has affected the connection capacity of Vietnam to Singapore. However, the network operator said that the quality will not be significantly affected because after the consecutive cable breaks of the five submarine fiber optic cables that Vietnam is using, telecommunications enterprises have prepared backup plans. In addition to routing to land fiber optic cables, domestic ISPs (Internet service providers) have shared and bought traffic from each other to make up for the shortage.

The APG submarine cable line was forced to postpone its capacity restoration schedule due to a new incident.

Vietnam is using 5 submarine cable lines connecting the Internet internationally. In early 2023, all 5 lines including AAG, APG, SMW-3, IA, AAE-1 had consecutive problems, but now 4 lines have returned to stable operation. The APG line alone has encountered problems many times in the past 8 months. Specifically, this 10,400 km long cable line had problems on different branches in January, March, June and most recently in August. The APG cable went into operation in mid-December 2016, running underground under the Pacific Ocean and with a maximum bandwidth of up to 54 Tbps.

The APG submarine cable has the investment of Vietnamese network operators VNPT, Viettel, FPT Telecom, CMC Telecom and is considered a cable line that contributes to providing stable transmission with larger capacity for Internet users in Vietnam.

According to Speedtest statistics in July, Vietnam's average mobile Internet speed reached 48.29 Mbps, up 5 places and ranked 45th globally. Fixed Internet speed reached 93.66 Mbps, ranked 46th.
