Every year, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) organizes an international letter-writing competition for children, aiming to develop their writing skills and enrich their creative thinking.

At the same time, the contest aims to help children approach and perceive social and contemporary issues and express their thoughts on these issues; foster and nurture the feelings and responsibilities of the young generation towards society, the country and the world. In addition, the contest helps children understand more about the role of the Postal Service in life and social development.

In 2025, the UPU international letter writing competition has the theme: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone, explaining why and how they should take good care of you and protect you.”

In English it is: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you”.

According to the organizers, with this year's theme, students were transformed into the ocean to raise issues they are facing, the most prominent of which is marine pollution.

Children can use their unlimited imagination and creativity to talk, confide, remind people about the role of the ocean as well as share specific solutions and actions to protect the ocean, sea and marine ecosystem; demonstrate the responsibility of people, especially the young generation, in preserving nature for sustainable development.

Poet Tran Dang Khoa commented: “The themes of the UPU letter writing contest often deal with big issues. The theme of this year’s contest is very good and meaningful. This is my favorite theme in the past 10 years.”

According to the poet, this is an open topic, stimulating creative thinking and emotions in each student. The contest judges are experienced writers and journalists who will discover and support unique and creative ideas. He also noted that students need to choose who they will send this letter to when they transform into the ocean.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Bui Hoang Phuong also said that as an active member of the Universal Postal Union, Vietnam has always actively participated in activities organized by the UPU, including the UPU letter writing competition, a meaningful activity associated with many generations of Vietnamese students.

The topics of the UPU letter writing competition are all related to major issues, some of which are on the United Nations agenda. Over the past 30 years of participating in the competition, Vietnamese students have won many international awards. Vietnam's response and active participation have been highly appreciated by the UPU and 192 UPU member countries.
