'Choosing a career should be based on the value of happiness'

VnExpressVnExpress31/03/2024

The value of job satisfaction is one of the important factors when choosing a major or career before university, according to experts shared at two career orientation seminars Empowering Tomorrow.

The program is organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) in collaboration with the Truong Nguoi Ta fanpage. Empowering Tomorrow has the participation of Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung - Deputy Director of UEH and Ms. Pham Thi Phuong Khanh - Marketing Director of Navigos Group Vietnam (owner of Vietnamworks).

The two experts analyzed for students three "understandings" that need to be determined before choosing a career and university, including: understanding oneself, understanding the market and understanding how universities train in the majors and careers. Through this, parents and teachers of high schools and middle schools can also receive a lot of information and solutions to accompany their children in the process of planning their future.

In the first issue of Empowering Tomorrow , the speakers delve into the topic of understanding yourself and the market. After many years of research, Ms. Pham Thi Phuong Khanh believes that each person should determine the value of happiness that work brings to themselves. In fact, many people share a common career development journey with three different levels.

The first is to find a job to do, that is, simply conquer a position that helps you cover your basic living expenses. This is the first need on the career journey.

After being able to meet the basic needs of life, people often think about the career they want to pursue. Workers will ask a number of questions such as how they develop, whether they make progress every day, what is the promotion path, what percentage of income growth...

Human resources will reach the final level when they have worked for a long time. According to her, at this time, people will recognize the value of happiness in work (inner calling), which is the meaning that work brings to them.

"For example, I love jobs that contribute value to the social community. Therefore, starting from the fact that I want to help people around me develop their careers, I will see what jobs can bring that value. This is what will make me happy," she analyzed.

The Marketing Director of Navigos Group Vietnam emphasized that it is very necessary to introduce this concept into career guidance from high school. Because, through the process of observing the market, she realized that there are many cases where, even though they have reached a senior position, going through the first two levels, these people still do not feel happy and go back to find out what makes them happy, from there, decide to take a new path.

"If this is achieved from the very beginning, students will have a happier career journey sooner. That is why I introduced the concept of paying attention to the value of work happiness in the journey of 'understanding oneself' of young people," she added.

However, to fully go through these three levels, students should still start from understanding themselves. Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung commented that understanding abilities, strengths, and interests is very, very difficult because these things can change over time. It is difficult for a high school student to really determine correctly.

Inclinations, interests, and abilities will be accumulated through learning and working experiences and connected with the surrounding environment, requiring each individual to understand themselves. However, instead of going into details about what they like, what their abilities are... students should approach the issue from two sides. For example, are you a rational or emotional person; like math or literature; like creativity or systematic processes; are you a comprehensive or meticulous person...

"Once identified, students can accumulate knowledge, experience and have the capacity to change in the face of future career challenges," he shared.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Quang Hung also emphasized the role of parents and teachers in this process. Those closest to students also need to understand and respect them, instead of imposing choices according to their wishes.

However, experts say that understanding yourself is not enough. Students and parents should learn about the market. In uncertain times, the world is changing rapidly, causing some repetitive jobs to be eliminated, machines can replace humans, and at the same time, create many new jobs.

Therefore, to adapt to uncertainty, young people need to understand which jobs may disappear in the future or become trends. At the same time, they need to choose a path that can help them equip themselves with a set of skills to adapt quickly to changes.

"Lifelong learning, continuous accumulation of knowledge and the ability to self-study are fundamental factors for us to see that changing working environments and careers is completely normal. A sustainable career is when individuals create happiness values at work," Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung added.

In addition, the two speakers also shared many other sustainable skills in the first issue of Empowering Tomorrow , thereby helping students open up the third "understanding": understanding the field of study and how universities train in the 5.0 era.

In Empowering Tomorrow episode two, experts share the growing influence of technology on other industries in life, requiring higher education institutions to innovate to keep up with market trends and help learners integrate faster.

At the beginning of this issue, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ha Minh Quan commented that Gen X and Y have the mindset of "mastering one profession, achieving glory for life", which is closely linked to the mindset of a stable career path. Meanwhile, Gen Alpha or later generations are predicted to change at least once or twice with unrelated or closely related fields in their career path. That is the reason why universities strive to equip the new generation of learners with multidisciplinary knowledge, helping them prepare for these changes.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Quang Hung added that Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is training in three main parts: skill sets to meet market needs; designing programs in a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary direction and internationality in training content.

Currently, universities around the world in general, UEH in particular, all incorporate technology into their training programs from economic fields such as finance, accounting, business administration... to social sciences. Recently, UEH has opened an additional ArtTech program, a fusion of technology and art, to provide the labor market with potential human resources.

In addition to professional training, Ms. Phuong Khanh encouraged higher education institutions to equip students with a vision that sees opportunities everywhere, instead of just in major economic centers like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Localities have a lot of development potential but always lack high-quality human resources.

Currently, universities also tend to expand to other areas, in addition to major economic centers. Among them, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics has branches in Vinh Long, Nha Trang or National University has a branch in Ben Tre... Therefore, young people can have more choices in their career development journey.

Students and parents can read more detailed analysis from experts on opportunities, career choices, and trending universities in the second episode of the Empowering Tomorrow talk show.
