According to Decision No. 724/QD-CTN signed by President Vo Van Thuong on June 22, 2023, 77 individuals were awarded the title of People's Artist (NSND). Meritorious Artist Thanh Tu is on the "golden list" this time, her profile was sent from the Hanoi Drama Theater.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Tu (born 1944) comes from an intellectual family in Hanoi. She is the second child in a family of 8 siblings, her father was the former Deputy Minister of Construction.
From 1960 to 1964, she studied and graduated from the Hanoi Theatre School (now the Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema). She became a drama actress, having been successful with roles such as: Tania in the play of the same name, achieving a record of more than 1,200 performances; Princess Minfo in Conspiracy and Love , which was also her most successful play.
In 1966, Thanh Tu made her film debut as Thao in Sea of Fire directed by Pham Ky Nam. She married director Pham Ky Nam that year.
In 1969, she continued to play the role of actress Huong Giang in the film adapted from the play of the same name Tien Tuyen Goi , directed by Pham Ky Nam.
After The Frontline Calls , she continued to play the role of Ha's mother in the film Hanoi Baby (1974), and the role of Hao in Sky (1975).
In 1976, she achieved great success with the role of Nhu in the film Sao Thang Tam directed by Tran Dac. For this role, she won the Best Actress award at the 4th Vietnam Film Festival in 1977, and was awarded a special prize by the All-Union Women's Committee at the Moscow Film Festival.
After the great success of the role of Nhu, she refused to participate in other film projects. It was not until 1984 that she participated again in films such as: Love and Distance, Fairy Tales for 17-Year-Olds, The Present Time, Flower Stall, Love Behind Bars ... However, these roles could not surpass the peak of Nhu in Sao Thang Tam .
In addition to acting, she is also a lecturer involved in training television actors, announcers and MCs.
Along with artists and directors Ngoc Quynh, Ngo Manh Lan, Phuong Thanh, Hai Ninh, Tra Giang, Nguyen Hong Sen, Tran Vu, Bui Dinh Hac, Bach Diep, Lam Toi, she is listed in the Encyclopedia of Soviet Cinema.
Thanh Tu said that her participation in the movie Sao Thang Tam was a coincidence. Initially, she intended to audition for the role of Chi Dau in the movie Tat Den , but was not chosen, but was chosen by Mr. Tran Dac for the role of Nhu in the movie Sao Thang Tam .
The character she plays is a female revolutionary cadre who transforms into many people: sometimes a farmer, sometimes a worker, sometimes a young lady, sometimes a woman, a bourgeois, sometimes a monk... To play a role that transforms into many different destinies like that, she had to try very hard.
"At that time, I was young, new to the profession, and had no experience. But I just acted honestly, without much technique," she honestly said.
Outside of movies, Thanh Tu still considers the stage a "sanctuary", so every time she mentions the stage, her eyes always sparkle with joy.
In November 2022, after many years of absence, Meritorious Artist Thanh Tu returned with the play Giac. In this work, she "carried" all 4 characters, the play participated in the 5th Hanoi International Experimental Theatre Festival.
Meritorious Artist Thanh Tu said that her return was not because she missed the glory of the stage, but because of a dream! She dreams of a day when the art of theater will be "revived" and audiences will flock to buy tickets to see plays like in the old days.
At the age of 79, Meritorious Artist Thanh Tu has a peaceful life with her children and grandchildren. She has two children, the eldest son settled in France. She currently lives with her second daughter in a house near West Lake.
After the ups and downs of two marriages, she said: "The happiest time is when my soul is at peace." In her free time, she often meets friends like artist Thanh Quy and playwright Trinh Thanh Nha to chat and talk.
Thanh Tu said that she has always been proud of the things she has done, the things she has achieved in life are all due to her own hard work and efforts. Then she turned to Buddhism to return to her true self, to be herself, to have a little peace of mind in the present, to resolve her troubled fate, to find a peaceful meaning in life.
"Buddhism helped me realize many truths after a series of restless days in my life. To be exact, I repented myself when following Buddhism: Naturally wait for what comes - Calmly send what goes - Love what you don't want - Mind is as peaceful as floating clouds", Thanh Tu confided.
Asked the female artist: At the age of U80, are you waiting for love to come to you? She said: "I have been waiting for a knight in my heart for many years. I am still waiting for something that will never come. But if I don't wait, I have no reason to live anymore.
For me, love is the same at any age, no different and for no reason, love is the harmony between two souls. No matter where we are, just talking and asking each other every day like that is enough," she confided.
