On April 1, information from Da Nang Family General Hospital said that it had successfully performed micro TESE surgery to find sperm for patient N. carrying male and female chromosomes 46,XX/46,XY.

Previously, patient N. (29 years old) was hospitalized at the Urology - Andrology unit and the IVFMD FAMILY Reproductive Support unit, because she got married in 2021 and had a normal frequency of sexual intercourse but still had no children.

Initial clinical examination and testing results showed bilateral testicular atrophy; the patient had no sperm in the ejaculate sample and had chromosomal abnormalities.

Doctors said that normally men carry the 46,XY chromosome set, women carry the 46,XX chromosome set. However, patient N. has both male and female chromosomes, with the female cell line being dominant (46,XX[42]/46,XY[8]).

The karyotype of patient N. shows a mosaic of two cell lines. In the picture is the 46,XX cell line.

According to Dr. Ho Huy, Head of the Urology - Andrology Unit, Da Nang Family General Hospital, this is a very rare chromosomal abnormality and is the cause of infertility. Mr. N's case is one of the rare cases not only in Vietnam but also in the world because he carries both male and female chromosomes.

The Urology - Andrology Unit and the IVFMD FAMILY Reproductive Support Unit performed micro TESE surgery to find sperm for patient N.

Mr. N.'s wife also underwent parallel egg retrieval to perform in vitro fertilization with her husband's sperm. As a result, the successfully retrieved sperm was combined with the wife's eggs to form 11 healthy embryos, preparing for the next embryo transfer step.

The team performed micro TESE surgery on the patient

Doctor CKII Doan Phuoc Hiep, Urology - Andrology unit, the main surgeon of the surgery, said that micro TESE is the most modern surgical technique today to search for sperm in testicular tissue under a high magnification microscope.

"Compared to conventional techniques, this new technique helps to increase the probability of finding sperm and causes less damage to testicular tissue. Micro TESE technique has been successfully performed at Da Nang Family General Hospital in the past time," said Dr. Doan Phuoc Hiep.

According to Dr. Hiep, micro TESE technique is the final aid for patients diagnosed with infertility due to male diseases or chromosomal abnormalities.
