Previously, people in Bien Son, Phong Van, Tan Son communes of Luc Ngan district mainly raised buffaloes and cows... At that time, horses were raised only for pulling power and as a means of transporting goods. At first, only a few households switched to raising white horses and found that raising white horses was quite simple, less susceptible to disease than raising buffaloes and cows, and the output was stable.
In recent years, people have begun to expand, develop and form a horse breeding model towards commodities, opening up a new direction for economic development for this mountainous region.
Phong Van Commune (Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang) is one of the typical white horse breeding locations. In just the last 2 years, the local government has provided about 200 breeding horses to families in difficult circumstances to raise and create new livelihoods.
Ms. Hua Thi Ha (Nung ethnic group) was given a white horse for breeding. Her family is a farmer, every day she takes the horse out to graze, and brings it home at night. "Thanks to the convenience of having many large pastures, when we received the horse support from the government, we were very happy. Before, my family's economy was very difficult, thanks to horse breeding, now I have savings," Ms. Ha said.
"Raising horses is relatively easy, does not require too much technical skill, takes advantage of grazing area and natural food sources, and brings much higher economic efficiency," Ms. Ha added.
According to households that have raised horses for many years here, because white horses have high economic value, many households are now investing in raising this animal. When white horses are over 5 months old, people will sell them for about 20 to 65 million VND/horse (depending on the quality of the horse). For adult white horses, the selling price is from 80 to 120 million VND/horse.
The Commune People's Committee also guides and supports in disease prevention and treatment for horses such as: hygiene techniques, disinfection, barn sterilization, isolation, vaccination... so raising horses is very convenient.
Mr. Tran Van Truong, Chairman of Phong Van Commune People's Committee, Luc Ngan District (Bac Giang Province) said: To increase connectivity, production and consumption of products, recently, Phong Van Commune authorities have mobilized a number of white horse breeding households in the locality to establish Phong Van Commune Agricultural and Forestry Service Cooperative.
At the same time, direct grassroots veterinary staff to strengthen coordination and transfer science and technology in disease care and prevention to people.
With the support of the district and specialized sectors, the commune has built a large livestock development program, focusing on improving the quality of the horse herd, aiming to develop horse products into typical OCOP products of the locality.
The process of raising white horses can completely utilize available natural foods such as grass, corn leaves combined with corn kernels or ground rice. Each household only needs to invest from 20 to 60 million VND to be able to buy a young stallion about 5 months old. If well cared for, after 3 years the mare will start to reproduce, on average the mare will give birth to 1 foal/year.
Compared to raising horses for meat or raising buffaloes and cows, raising white horses is more convenient and you can rest assured about the output of the product. The effectiveness of the white horse breeding model of the people in the commune has been clearly affirmed in practice. The commune government has had a policy and directly directed other villages in the commune to organize tours to expand this model to the whole commune. Currently, the whole commune has about 1,600 horses of all kinds, of which white horses account for 65 - 70% of the herd.
Horse breeding has shown encouraging results, helping people increase their income, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, and contribute positively to the construction of local economic life. In the coming time, the district will continue to direct the Department of Agriculture of Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province to support households raising horses in terms of breeding animals.
The district also supports farmers in accessing bank loans, providing support for vaccines, organizing training courses on livestock raising skills, breeding, and expanding herds for people, and establishing cooperatives for raising white horses to ensure output and input.
Raising white horses has contributed to the formation of commodity production areas, gradually changing people's farming practices, applying scientific and technological advances and implementing sustainable, closed farming processes. The white horse breeding model in Luc Ngan district (Bac Giang) also contributes to creating jobs for ethnic minorities, increasing income, promoting concentrated farming and improving product quality, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the locality.
